I Love Rock ‘n Roll Night victories snagged by Legg, Armstrong, Hiatt, Horsham and Grossenbacher

By Greg Soukup

The temperature was up into the mid-90’s and the car count was down to just 129 for I love Rock ‘N Roll Night at Eagle Raceway Saturday, presented by the Nebraska Lottery, Kaplan University and Miller Lite. The good-sized crowd saw 3 and even 4-wide racing throughout the evening.

The preliminary events were run without serious incidents.

Bob Ruisinger’s #7 led the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Main at the end of the first lap followed by Jesse Osmon in the 4J, Joe Schidler’s K00 and the 40 of Shawn Harker. Schidler move to second on lap 3 and Gary Saathoff put the 96 into fourth. The next time around Saathoff moved up to third and Mark Leiting cracked the top 4, putting the 20M into fourth. Schidler took the lead on lap 6, but Trent Roth looped his #14T in turns 3 & 4. That made the top 4 Ruisinger, Schidler, Saathoff and Harker. Benji Legg passed Harker on lap 7, putting the 25B into fourth. Legg jumped up to second on lap 9. Harker moved back to fourth with 8 to go and Legg advanced to first the next lap. Saathoff also passed Ruisinger with 5 to go. Roth spun again with 4 circuits left, this time in turn 4. The final change in the top 4 came with 3 to go as Harker moved up to third. The final top 4 were Legg, Saathoff, Harker and Ruinsinger.

“It felt good to get a win again. We really struggled last week; the car just wasn’t very good. When that happens, I take the car into the shop and go through everything. I found a bad shock and pan arm bar mount. Mike Gocke stopped by and suggested some things that really made the car come alive. That was a good feeling, and right now, we feel like we can come back and win a bunch more” Legg stated. Legg’s sponsors include Toobie’s Lumber and Jet Racing.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main saw Brint Lemke’s 26L lead the first circuit followed by Kenny Roberts in the 69, Sydney Yost in the 20 and the 01 of Allyn Shiveley. Yost moved to second on lap 2 as David Carter took over fourth. Yost spun the next time around, moving Carter to second, Roberts to third and Shiveley fourth. TeJay Mielke looped the 77X on lap 4 for a caution. Rick Bradley used the restart to take the fourth spot in his 88P before giving the position up to Adam Armstrong’s 6A the next time around. Armstrong moved to third before that lap could be completed. Tyler Saathoff cracked the top 4 on lap 7 in his 16T. Lemke slowed dramatically with 8 laps left with a flat tire, making the top 4 Carter, Armstrong, Saathoff and the 23 of Mark McKinney. Armstrong took the lead with 6 to go. With just 1 lap left, Roberts spun in turn 2 and the yellow flag flew. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish as Armstrong won, Carter was 2nd, third went to Saathoff and McKinney grabbed fourth.

Armstrong said “Brint Lemke should have won that race, and would have if he hadn’t lost the right rear. I’m thrilled with this Jet Racing car, and I want to thank Johnny for that. Also, thanks to him for letting me borrow his welder after I broke a motor mount in my heat”. Armstrong’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Hummer Contracting, Ron Fox and Sons Motorsports, Scat Cranks and Icon Pistons.

Bob Zoubek’s 33Z was first to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified main event with Mike Lineberry’s 72, Tim Pickens in the 00 and Shane Hiatt’s 21H close behind. Zoubek was spun by another racer on lap 3, sending him to the pits to check for damage and leaving Nathan Landauer’s 11N and Lineberry stopped in turns 1 & 2.  The top 4 at that time were Pickens, Hiatt, Matt Boucher’s 5B and Johnny Saathoff in the 96J. Justin Wulf vaulted to third on the restart in the 86. Saathoff moved to third on lap 4 as Jared Hoefelman put the 15H into fourth.  Hoefelman jumped up to second the next lap. Wulf’s left rear tire began to smoke the next lap after contact with another race car and he slowed dramatically on lap 8 to light the yellow lights before heading to the pits. That put Chad Andersen’s 8C into fourth. Andersen moved to third on the restart and then up to second with 10 laps left. The final top 4 were Hiatt, Andersen, Hoefelman and Saathoff.

This was Hiatt’s third Eagle Raceway win this season. “My crew gave me a really great car tonight, so thanks to them. My brakes got kind of used up towards the end there, but thanks to the lapped traffic I held on for the win. Thanks also to my mom and dad for all that they do for me. I’ve been super stoked this week; we had a baby, Ivan on Tuesday. Then, it was my birthday Wednesday and my uncle’s birthday is Monday. I can’t thank my wife Kylie enough for letting me go racing, although she was in lots of pain” he related. Hiatt’s sponsors include Jono’s Racing Engines, CPD Racing Tools, Razor Chassis, Shelby Hotel, Knuth Farms, X-Factor Bushings, J & K Motorsports, 3E Electric, BBR, Moock Trucking, Benes Service, Rerucha Ag and Auto, Over the Edge Motorsports, Pump ‘n Munch, Ian’s Wish and Frank Soukup.

The first try at a start for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts was called back when Tommy Etherton jumped the start in his 24T and was set back a row. Sarah Cronin’s 8, the 3 of Tim Horsham, Tom Powell in the 18R and the 3J of Jeremy Baker were the top 4 when the first lap was official. Horsham took over first on lap 2 as Cronin went to the pits. That moved Etherton into fourth. Justin Olsen passed Etherton the next lap, putting the 14J in fourth. Olsen advanced to third with 8 to go. Cronin stopped again with 5 to go. On the restart Olsen moved up to second. Matt Moyer put the 29 into fourth with 2 to go for the final change in the top 4. Horsham finished first, Olsen second, Powell third and Moyer fourth.

Horsham said “I’ve been having a lot of bad luck lately, but this win makes up for it. It was redemption. This win was for my niece Kim Brigham who is battling brain cancer. She’s showed some improvement though, so that’s good. Tonight worked out great! Thanks to the fans who come out every week, because if it wasn’t for them, we couldn’t do this. And, thanks to my brother Bob who made the trip to Eagle tonight”. Horsham’s sponsors include U-Pull It and technical advice from Jerry’s Auto Service.

Mike Boston’s #51 failed to fire for the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A, relegating him to the 20th position in the final results. Nate Weiler’s 54, the 93 of Ryan King, Matt Richards in the 1R and Dan Satriano’s 95 were the top 4 after lap 1. Clint Benson put his #100 into fourth on lap 2. Richards took second for a moment on lap 4 before losing the spot to Benson. Adam Gullion took over fourth on lap 5 in the 91 before taking third on lap 7. Benson snagged the lead on lap 10 , but Richards spun in turn 4 and the action slowed. At that time the top 4 were Weiler, Benson, Gullion and the 18 of Terry Richards. Benson moved back into first on the restart and was followed into second on lap 13 by Gullion. Richards moved to third and Trevor Grossenbacher took fourth the next lap. Grossenbacher continued his march to the front, advancing to third with 10 to go and then moving to second the next time around. With 3 to go Grossenbacher passed Benson for the lead. The next lap saw Richards pass Gullion for third. At the checkers it was Grossenbacher, Benson, Richards and Gullion. Gullion was disqualified for installed spring pressure not conforming to the rules during the tech inspection after the race. That put Toby Chapman’s 7KX into fourth and moved all others in the A up one position.

Grossenbacher’s victory came from the 12th starting position. “I haven’t had a more fun race all season!! It was a really good night, and even better because almost my whole family was here tonight to see it. Thanks to my mom and dad for their support and to my crew for giving me such a fantastic car. Also, the biggest thanks to my wife and son who give me a reason to win” Grossenbacher stated. Grossenbacher’s sponsors include Stop ‘n Shop, Lincoln Winnelson, WC’s South, Husker Diesel and Mark Schmidt Enterprises.
