Harms, Macku, Grabouski, King & Martin take home wins

By Greg Soukup

A good sized crowd braved strong winds to watch some great racing Saturday night at Eagle Raceway as Mud In America and the Nebraska Lottery presented “In the beginning…there was dirt”. Three-wide racing into the features kept all of those in attendance riveted throughout the evening.

There were no major incidents in the preliminary events.

Gary Joens Jr. held the lead at the end of the first lap of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature in his #68J with the 33 of Jeremy Noonan, Nate Thompson’s 3T and the 6H of Jason Harms rounding out the top 4. Noonan passed Joens for the lead on lap 5 and Harms moved to third the next lap. Benji Legg jumped up to third on lap 7 in his 25B as Thompson held fourth. Anthony Kobus’ 27 slammed the wall hard coming out of turn 4 on lap 9 and the yellow flag flew. At that time it was Noonan, Harms, Legg and Thompson out front. Harms used the restart to pass Noonan and snag the lead. Legg also got past Noonan the next lap. Dion Kovar moved the 18 into fourth with 8 circuits left and advanced to third with 2 laps remaining. The top four at the end were Harms, Legg, Kovar and Noonan.

Harms could not be located for an interview.

Nick Beckman’s 22, the 92 of RJ Macku, Chad Fegley in the 13F and the 44 of John Cain led the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A as the field completed lap #1. Macku grabbed the lead on lap 2 with Fegley also passing Beckman on lap 4. Cain moved up to third with 8 to go. Jason Kohl completed the final changes in the top 4, taking the fourth spot with 7 laps left and then passing Cain for third the next time around. Macku, Fegley, Kohl and Cain were the first four at the checkers.

“It’s cool to be back out front, and we’ve got the new car working good. I need to thank all of the people who stand behind us every week. And a special thanks to Tye Medley, Mike Towle and Thom Marsh. It’s so good to finally get the monkey off of my back with another win” Macku said. Macku’s sponsors include Mr. Yards & More, CS Burleigh Real Estate, The Shop Inc., Pro Tint, Big Johnson Racing, T & T Motorsports, Sky Limit Remodeling, Apthorpe and Orion Racing.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified A saw Jordan Grabouski’s 30, the 21H of Shane Hiatt, Johnny Saathoff in the 96J and the 11N of Nathan Landauer the first ones back to the flag stand on the first lap. Saathoff passed Hiatt on lap 2, but Hiatt got back the position before the lap was completed. Saathoff made the pass stick the next time around and Justin Wulf moved up to fourth on lap 4. Hiatt got back around Saathoff with 9 laps remaining. The next lap saw Wulf loop it and head to the infield before gathering it up and rejoining the race. That moved Mike Densberger’s 81 into fourth. The yellow flag was unfurled with just 5 laps remaining for debris on the front stretch. Dustin Andersen moved his 8A past Densberger 1 lap after the restart, only to lose the position back to him with 3 to go. Saathoff moved back to second the next time around. Grabouski won, followed by Saathoff, Hiatt and Densberger.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been here it seems. We’ve got a very fast car, but it makes it easier when you start up front. It’s great to get a win with the open motor and not the crate motor. I need to thank Tommy and Wojo for all that they do for me. And there are a lot more folks who make it possible for me to race, and they deserve my thanks too” Grabouski related.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts were next on the track. The first four on lap #1 were the 82B of Kurt Beckstrom, Amanda Rhiley’s 51, the 13 James King and Larry Cronin in the 5. King passed Rhiley on lap 3 and Brandon Thornton moved the 21T into fourth the next lap. Beckstrom dropped to the infield on lap 7 with a flat tire, putting King out front followed by Rhiley Thornton and Matt Moyer’s 29. Moyer passed Thornton 2 laps later and the moved to second with 2 to go. As the cars hit the finish line it was a photo finish with King holding on for the victory, Moyer second by a hair, Rhiley third and Thornton fourth.

This was King’s first A Feature win ever, and when he was told he was being interviewed for the website a VERY loud ‘WHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!’ was heard from the background. “First, I need to thank all of the racers for always running clean. I honestly thought that the second and third place cars let me win, because it seemed that last year I kept trying; but every time I was in the lead I’d blow up” King stated. King’s sponsors include Moose Mountain, Brenning Painting and King Ranch Customs.

The first lap of the Mud In America IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car feature was called back as Terry Richards looped his #18 in turn 1, collecting the 52 of Nick Bryan and Gene Ackland’s 14G. The first official lap saw Joey Danley’s 14 out front with Doug Lovegrove’s 1, the 51 of Mike Boston and Adam Gullion’s 91 the first four. Boston snagged the lead on lap 4 as Jason Martin’s 5X moved up to fourth. It took Martin just 1 more lap to vault up to the second spot. Lovegrove moved back to third on lap 9 and Gullion got back into fourth the next lap. Gullion then passed Lovegrove 2 laps later for third. Martin passed Boston for the lead with 4 laps left, but Boston regained the lead the next circuit. The following lap Gullion slip broadside into the implement tire guarding the pit entrance. He was helped to his trailer and stated that he would be fine after the races. That made the top 4 Boston, Martin, Lovegrove and Danley. Martin again passed Boston for the lead on the restart as Toby Chapman put his 1BX into fourth, but gave the spot up to Clint Benson’s 100 the next time around. Martin took the victory with Boston second, Lovegrove third and Benson fourth.

This was Jason’s second win in a row. “I thought it was really cool when we snookered the King of Eagle. I really didn’t want to go up top, so I made the bottom work. But, when Mike moved to the bottom I had to forget about the broken Jacob’s Ladder and just head up top and go for it” Martin said. Martin’s sponsors include Midwest Riggings and Trucks Plus.
