Hall of Fame Night Features won by Eckhoff, Hansen, Ableson, Johnson and Boston

There were several special guests Saturday night at Eagle Raceway for Hall of Fame Night, sponsored by Bud Light. However, none of them were as welcome as the one that has been absent from the high banks; racing weather. After 3 consecutive rain-outs, the regular season resumed in front of a large crowd and eventually, sunny skies.
The only incident in the preliminary action was when the #9 sprinter of Frank Sheridan suffered a fuel leak in the cockpit which caught fire. Sheridan steered his car into the infield and exited it quickly as the Fire & Rescue team extinguished the flames. Sheridan was taken to the hospital but release with burns on his right hand and both heels.
During intermission Ed Bowes, Don Droud and 2 others wheeled a varied group of historic race cars around the track to give the fans a glimpse of the history of competition seen over the past 50 years.

Adam Vrbka’s 7V, Kevin Anderson’s 22K, the 40 of Shawn Harker and Jeremy Noonan in the 33 were all involved in a pileup at the beginning of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A main event. Harker’s mount was towed to the pits. Bob Ruisinger led the first lap in his #7 followed by the 44D of Derek Hall, Trevor Baker’s 25! and the 5 of Ken Eckhoff. Baker moved to 2nd on lap 4. 3 laps later Anthony Kobus jumped his #27 to third and the next lap Eckhoff retook fourth. Hall spun in turn four shortly after to bring out the caution flag. At that time the running order was Ruisinger, Baker, Kobus and Eckhoff. Baker got past Ruisinger on lap 11 as Eckhoff moved up to third. Hall stopped on the back stretch the next lap for the final caution of the race. With 3 circuits remaining Benji Legg took his 25B to fourth. The final change in the top 4 came on the final 2 corners as Eckhoff used a slide job to move to second. At the checkered flag it was Baker, Eckhoff, Ruisinger and Legg. During post-race tech however, Baker was disqualified giving the victory to Eckhoff.

This was Eckhoff’s first Sport Modified win after spending several years competing in the A Modified division. “The track was smooth and fast tonight. I was actually being conservative the whole race, but I thought I was a little faster than the cars in front of me” Eckhoff stated. Ken’s sponsors are FX Suspension, Shiners Semi Wheel Polishing and Auto Truck & RV.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature saw Mark McKinney’s 23 lead lap #1 followed by Nick Lindblad in the 26, Rob Brown’s 42 and Chad Fegley in the 13F. Garrett Bolander vaulted his 98X up to second on lap 2 with Brown retaining third and Fegley staying in fourth. Fegley, Bolander and Brown made contact on lap 5 and Brown spun to the infield with Bolander heading to the pits. Fegley was sent to the rear of the field as a result of the contact. The top four at that time were McKinney, Joe Wollenhaupt in the 4W, Justin Busboom’s 62 and Mike Hansen in the 94. Wollenhaupt passed McKinney for the lead on lap 8 with Hansen taking second and Busboom staying in third. McKinney moved to third the next lap, but Busboom repassed him the next time around as Hansen snagged the lead. Don Hall Jr.’s 92 and Brown spun in turn 4 on lap 15. The top 4 were Hansen, Wollenhaupt, Busboom and the 93 of RJ Macku. Busboom passed Wollenhaupt with 3 circuits left for the final change in the top 4.

“My first win ever came last September here after 11 years of racing, and it was great getting #2 tonight” Hansen said. He finished the interview by relating “I want to thank Roger for giving us such a great place to race. The track tonight was really smooth. Also, thanks to Kevin for all of his help on the car”. Hansen’s main sponsor is Keckler’s Complete Auto Repair.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds were up next for their A Feature. Chris Alcorn’s 3, the S56 of Scott Bivens, Chad Andersen in the 8C and Mike Densberger’s 81 were the top 4 at the end of the first circuit. Chris Abelson moved his 1X to fourth on lap #5, then leapt into the top position the next time around. Densberger moved up to third on lap 8, then took over second 2 laps later. Just as it appeared that the race might go green, white, checkered Dustin Andersen’s 8A slowed coming out of turn 4 and the yellow lights came on. Dylan Smith took his #95 to fourth on the restart. With 2 laps left Kevin Larkins’4X spun in 3 and four for a final caution. Smith moved up to third on the restart and the final lap saw the 96J of Johnny Saathoff crack the top 4.

“It was so nice to come back to Eagle. The track was really really good and smooth. I found the top first, but I had to do most of my passing in the middle” Ableson related. He concluded the interview by stating “I really love Eagle, ever since I got the win in my first visit here in 2009. It’s always a great place to race”. Ableson’s sponsors include Razor Chassis by Roth Racing, Bilstein Shocks, Edwardson Racing Engines and the Klub Lisa Girls.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts then moved onto the track for their main event. James King led lap one in his #13 with Nickalaus Jensen’s 48J, Sydney Yost’s 20 and the 25 of Josh Johnson close behind. Johnson passed Yost on lap 2 for third. The next lap the yellow flag was shown due to debris. Johnson and Yost both moved up a spot on lap five. Ole Olsen cracked the top 4 on lap 7 in the 23. Matt Moyer moved his #29 past Olsen with 4 to go. King started to pull away when his engine expired in a huge fireball. That made the running order Yost, Johnson, Moyer and the 15 of Tyler Thompson. On the restart Johnson and Moyer both passed Yost. The final top four were Johnson, Moyer, Yost and Thompson.

This was Johnson’s 2nd win out of the 4 races this year at Eagle. “I just hope to continue to do well. I want to thank my family and the fans, because without them I wouldn’t be here”. Johnson’s sponsors are Belmont Husky and IntoMetal.

The Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprint car A saw the 73 of Lee Bowes first back to the flag stand with Matt Richards’ 44, the 1B of Brandon Horton and Mike Boston’s 51 in hot pursuit. Over the next 3 circuits Boston moved up one position each lap to take the lead on lap #4. Lap 6 saw Terry Richards move to third in his #18 with Eric Reichwaldt taking the #13 to fourth the next time around. Reichwaldt and Richards swapped spots the next two laps. Richards grabbed secon on lap 14. The 15th lap saw Clint Benson’s 100 take over the fourth spot and then move to third the next time around. Richard Weers took the fourth position on the final circuit to make the top 4 Boston, Richards,
Benson and Weers.

“After that wreck the last time we ran we needed a whole new XXX chassis and I sent the motor back to Woods Performance to be looked at, so I had a completely new car under me tonight. But my crew is so great that we didn’t have to change a thing. I really have to thank Woods Performance, because they are the only reason I’m racing” Boston said. Mike’s sponsors include Moock Trucking, Johnson Farms, Zoz farms and Woods Performance.

Next weekend is Junior Fan Club Night presented by Colby Ridge, featuring the $1000 Kids Gold Rush. Front gates open and hot laps begin at 5:30. Front gate admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youths 6-12 and children 5 and under are free. Pit gates open at 4 with pit admission being $20. The Budweiser IMCA Racesaver sprint, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts will be racing.
