Gullion, Moyer, Zoubek, Borgman & Fegley are Student Breakout Victors

By Greg Soukup

Saturday’s Student Breakout-Driver Appreciation Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by NAPA and Coors Light, saw an overflow crowd in the stands and 157 teams filled the pits at on a warm, sunny day with a strong northerly breeze.

Heat race action saw 2 racers get up and over as Ashley Schaaf took a wild ride in the #95 Kaplan University IMCA Modified second heat race and Richard Weers’ #55 Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car flipped in turn 2 after contact with another racer. Neither driver was badly injured.

One C Feature and 5 B Features set the final lineups for the A Mains.

The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified main event saw Dana Deeke’s 36, the 3T of Nate Thompson, Don Rinke in the 2R and Joe Schidler’s K00 the first back to the flag stand on lap 1. Lap 2 Logan Thomsen’s 9T spun in turn 4. The restart was called off for debris. Schidler went very high on the second restart and Arie Schouten put the 99RE into fourth. Jeremy Noonan took his 33 past Schouten the next time around to take the fourth position. Another debris caution happened the next circuit. Noonan moved up to third on the restart and grabbed second on lap 6 as Gary Saathoff’s 96 snagged fourth. Thompson moved past Noonan for second after another lap. Lance Borgman cracked the top four the next lap in his #76 before jumping all of the way to second the next circuit. Saathoff moved up to third and Borgman moved to the lead the same lap. Mark Leiting put the 20M into fourth and Saathoff grabbed second with 5 to go. Leiting continued his charge, moving to third the next circuit and overtaking Saathoff with 2 to go. The final top 4 were Borgman, Leiting, Saathoff and Deeke.

Borgman’s victory was his third this season, starting out in 12th. “This has been a good season so far, considering we don’t race here regularly. You have to take them when you can get them. Thanks to my dad and father-in-law for coming out tonight” he stated. Borgman’s sponsors include Coordsen Farms, Penner Insurance, Jet Racing, Hergott Farms and Hamilton Construction.

Cody Leifeld in the 24X was in the lead at the end of lap 1 for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks with Chad Fegley’s 13F, the 55N of Luke Nicholson and Travis Albracht’s 38A rounding out the top 4. Fegley passed Leifeld for the lead on lap 2 as Mark McKinney put the #23 into 4th the next time around. McKinney got past Nicholson on lap 5. The final position change in the top 4 came with 2 to go as Jeff Watt’s moved to fourth in the #66. Fegley won, Leifeld was second, McKinney held onto third and Watts was fourth.

“I started in fourth and got a great jump. I didn’t even touch the car until this morning, and spent about 2 hours on it. It’s tough when you have your own business to find time for maintenance on the race car. It was great to finally get a win this year; that’s because I didn’t screw it up this time. I’m not going to run for points this year because of work commitments. I want to thank Roger and his staff for all that they do. We’re all lucky to race at a fabulous place like Eagle” related Fegley. Fegley’s sponsors include The Shop, Inc., J & J Fab and Sapp Brothers.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified A Feature’s first circuit was led by Jeff Schroyer’s 007, the V45 of Rik Gropp, Aaron Pella’s 3A and Nathan Landauer in the 11N. Gropp took the lead on lap 2 as Anthony Roth in the 60IV grabbed fourth and then moved up to third the same circuit. Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z stopped at the bottom of 1 and 2 the next time around, causing a caution. Landauer advanced to third on the restart and Bob Zoubek put the 33Z into fourth on lap 5. The next time around Landauer took over second. Roth again moved to fourth the next lap. The yellow flag was brought out again with 10 to go for debris on the track and the restart was called back because of more debris found as Roth headed to the pits. At that time it was Gropp, Schroyer, Zoubek and the 8A of Dustin Andersen. As the action got back under way, both Zoubek and Andersen moved up a spot. Zoubek took over the top spot the next lap as Roger Hadan put the 4 into fourth. Hadan moved to third the next lap. With 6 laps remaining, another debris caution was called. There was 4 laps left when Hadan passed Gropp for second. 1 more lap was in the books when Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth. The top four at the checkers were Zoubek, Hadan, Gropp and Hiatt.

Zoubek’s first Eagle Raceway victory this year came from the 11th starting spot. “I got lucky when people got stalled up in turns 1 and 2. I had to take to the infield to keep from getting involved, but I got my spot back. I went to the top in 3 and 4 and that got me the lead. From there I was gone. I want to thank my car owner Neil Zank and my pit crew” said Zoubek.

Amanda Rhiley in the 51, RJ Maas’ 88K, the 10J of Jeremy Bohlen and Tom Powell’s 18R led the first lap of the Mountain Dew Kick Start A Feature. Matt Moyer vaulted all the way to third on lap 5 after Bohlen hit the wall in turn 1 very hard, losing his right front tire. That put Moyer back to fourth when the yellow lights were extinguished. Moyer steadily moved forward, taking the lead for good with 9 to go. That made the top 4 Moyer, Powell, Maas and the 14J of Justin Olsen. Olsen moved up to third with 7 laps left. Scott Spellmeier put the 88S into fourth the next time around. Nick Lindblad lost a tire off of his #26 with 2 to go, causing another caution. Cole Krichau took over fourth in the 30K with 2 to go, but gave the spot up to the 32 of Spencer Pavey III. That made the top 4 Moyer, Powell, Olsen and Pavey III.

Moyer’s first 2016 win came from the 10th starting spot. “This win really feels good! I’m having a ball. With all of the speed being showed in the class this year, it makes it just that much sweeter to win one” related Moyer. Moyer’s sponsors include Ludeman Construction, Kinnersley Grading and General Siding Supply.

Dan Satriano’s 77X was the first back to the flag stand after a lap in the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Main with Toby Chapman in the 7KX, the 52 of Nick Bryan and Keith Dragoo’s 77D hot on his push bumper. Chapman took the lead on lap 3 while Adam Gullion put the 91 into fourth. Jason Martin’s 5X and the 12 of Tyler Drueke spun in turn 2 the next lap for a caution period. Martin’s racer was towed back to the pits, but Drueke was able to continue. Gullion passed Bryan on the restart for third and advanced to second the next time around. Bryan passed Chapman on lap 8 and Chapman also lost fourth to the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher the next time around. Grossenbacher moved up to third after another circuit. Lap 12 saw Gullion move to the lead as Mike Boston moved up to fourth in his #51. Grossenbacher advanced to second with 5 to go and Boston followed him into third 2 laps later. Grossenbacher temporarily moved to the lead on the final lap, but Gullion went to the bottom in the final 2 corners as Grossenbacher went high. The two banged wheels coming out of 4 and Gullion took the win by just 6 thousandths of a second. The top four were Gullion, Grossenbacher, Boston and the 20P of Shon Pointer who took over fourth at the end.

This was Gullion’s second win in a row. “I was going good running the bottom, but the lapped cars were running there, so I had to make a decision. I moved up to the top late and got sideways. But, Trevor left the bottom open coming to the finish. We got together at the end, but it was just a racing deal. It wasn’t on purpose; it just happened. My crew chief just got out of the burn unit, so I was glad to get the win for him. In fact, I called him a bunch today to talk things over with him. I didn’t think we’d be able to turn our year around the way we have, and getting 2 wins in a row is really shocking to me. We decided to not run for points this year, just wins” said Gullion. Gullion’s sponsors include Precise Roofing, Liquid Nitro, Pro Roloffs, Filley Custom Powder Coating, Pro Shocks, Engler, Fuel Safe and Sardeson Racing.

Next Saturday at Eagle Raceway is Junior Fan Club Night. There will be a kid’s money grab at intermission. Front gates open at 5:15 with hot laps at 5:30 and racing at 6:30.
