Grossenbacher, Roth, Andrews, Bruce & Ware are Victorious at Memorial Day Party-Ganza

Grossenbacher, Roth, Andrews, Bruce & Ware are Victorious at Memorial Day Party-Ganza

by Greg Soukup

Saturday night saw a near capacity crowd fill the stands for the Memorial Day Party-Ganza presented by Duros Dent Works and Great Clips. They were treated to 18 heats, 5 B Features and 5 A Features with some of the best battles seen on the high banks of Eagle Raceway in a long, long time. From the drop of the green flag to the final checkers there were slide jobs, side-by-side racing and just plain fierce racing in all classes.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.

The first A Feature was for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modifieds. With 3 false starts to begin the race, 3 cars ended up heading to the pits. When the first official lap was completed Bradley Schreiner’s 10, the K00 of Joe Schidler, Rich Flock in the 88F and Joe Feyen’s 25X were out front. Schidler passed Schreiner on lap 2 for the lead and Cole Wayman jumped up to second in his 18W on lap 4. Schidler’s car spun in turns 3 and 4 the next time around, moving Matthew Andrews’ 22 into fourth. Andrews vaulted up to second on the restart followed by Schreiner and Feyen. Derek Hall put the 44D into fourth the following circuit. Hall moved up to third with 10 to go. Nick Morris looped the 11H the next time around for another caution. Shawn Harker jumped his #40 into fourth with 7 laps to go. Jeremy Baker’s 3J stopped on the next lap, and the yellow lights came on in the corners again. Harker advanced to third with 5 circuits remaining. Gunnar Pike advanced to fourth the next lap. Andrews moved up to the top spot with 2 laps left. Wayman made hard contact with the wall in turns 1 and 2 the next time around, and the yellow flag was brought out again. From there to the finish the top 4 remained unchanged with Andrews winning, Harker second, Gunner Pike third and Hall fourth.

Andrews began his run from the sixth spot on the starting grid. Andrewes said “I was trying my best to be patient because I haven’t been the last couple of weeks, and we’ve wrecked a lot of stuff. Cole got out front. He’s a good, quick, competitive guy and it took me awhile to get around him. Once I did, I managed to hold on to get the checkered flag”. Andrews’ sponsors include Bonta Medical, Jet Racing, Skytop Towers, Lippy’s Barbecue and RDM Landscapes.

Next, the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks took to the track. Jeff Watt’s in the 66, Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B, Albert Kiihne in the 85 and the 39 of Colby Kaspar were the top 4 at the end of lap 1. Roy Armstrong put the 6R into fourth on lap 2 and Kaspar moved to second on lap 3. Armstrong advanced to second the next time around. Jeff Ware put the 83 into fourth after another lap. Tyler Jackson’s 13T and the B4 of Ben Becher stopped on the front stretch the next lap. Armstrong used the restart to take over the lead. Dave Carter looped the 2C in turn 2 with 12 to go for another caution. Ware moved to third on the restart and then took over second the next circuit. Ware then began stalking Armstrong and took over the lead with 6 laps left. The final to 4 were Ware, Armstrong, Watts and Kaspar.

Ware was the points champion in 2018 and continued his winning ways after starting 11th. He related “Yeah, that was good, getting back to back wins. The track was different tonight; hammer down and run the high side! I was following Roy, and it looked like he kept messing up, especially coming out of turn 2. His car kept pushing and I knew it was just a matter of time before I got to him. I knew he was going to do it again and I had to counter on it. I would only get one chance and I hit it perfect. I want to thank my Aunt and Uncle, Amy and Gary and my Dad”.  Ware’s sponsors include Roth Racing, Shane’s Repair, Demon Decals, Charger Chassis, T & R Repair, Integra Shocks and Avenue Bar.

The first circuit of the Hoosier Tire IMCA Modified A Main saw Bob Zoubek’s 5Z, the 7 of Bob Ruisinger, Mike Lineberry in the 72 and Johnny Saathoff’s 96J out front. Lineberry passed Ruisinger on lap 2 for second, Mike Densberger spun in turns 3 & 4 on lap 3. Saathoff moved to third on the restart as Ruisinger fell to fourth. Anthony Roth put the 60IV into fourth the next lap and moved to third after another circuit. Zoubek went very high in 3 & 4 the next lap and Roth jumped into the lead. Densberger and the 25! Of Trevor Baker came to a halt in turn 4 with 11 to go and the wreckers had to be used to separate the 2 cars. Saathoff took advantage of the restart to move to third as Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth. Lineberry passed both Saathoff and Hiatt the next lap to take over third as Hiatt remained in fourth. Justin Wulf put his 86 into fourth the next lap and moved to third after another circuit. Wulf got up to second the next time around, but Andrew Bowman looped the 89B stopped on the front stretch. At that time the top 4 were Roth, Zoubek, Lineberry and Wulf. Wulf passed Zoubek on the restart, lost the spot back to him the next lap and took it for good after another circuit. Chad Andersen took over fourth in the 8C that lap and moved to third with 2 to go. The final top 4 were Roth, Wulf, Andersen and Zoubek.

Roth’s victory came from outside the 6th row at the start. “I just went where all of the other cars weren’t to start. I knew that I started a long way back there, had a long way to go and a short time to get up there. It was a really fun win, especially in front of that huge crowd tonight” he stated. Roth’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Afco Shocks, Jerovitz Motorsports, Superior Fuel Cells, Speedway Crate Engines, Steve’s Yard Care, Out-Pace Racing Products, KSC Racing Products, Shell Valley Classic Wheels, R&R Sandblasting, Cuba Construction, Totally Clipz Salon, Roth Racing, Wild West Barbecue, BSB Manufacturing, Fast Shafts, Wilwood, Aero Race Wheels and Schoenfeld Headers.

The ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact finale saw the first lap lead go to the 52D of Devin Bruce with Steffen Oaks’ 17, the 24 of Drake Bohlmeyer and Shawn Hein in the 5H rounding out the top 4. Bohlmeyer and Oaks swapped second place the next 2 laps before Bohlmeyer jumped all the way up to first 3 laps later. Oaks grabbed second the next time around from Bruce. Bruce repassed Oaks with 9 to go and moved to the lead 4 laps later as Oaks also passed Bohlmeyer. The top 4 fought tooth and nail over the closing laps and you could cover them with the proverbial blanket all the way to the finish. At the end it was Bruce, Bohlmeyer, Oaks and Hein.

“That was a lot of fun! There at the end I think we were 3-wide. I didn’t know how close it was; I thought I was out all by myself. My car was bad fast!! The track wasn’t quite dry-slick; it was tacky in places and my car is really good when it’s tacky with the tire pressures that I run. Steffen Oaks and I were side by side for what seemed like the whole race. I don’t know what got into my car; it just took off and I passed the 24. I banged into him pretty hard after hitting a rut in turn 1, but he was totally understanding. I want to thank my biggest 2 sponsors; my Mom and Dad and also Tide for the paint scheme” he said. Bruce’s sponsors include Mechanical Services, Sign Pro and Five Star Truck Services.

The last race was for the Duros Dent Works Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars. Brandon Horton put the 1B out front of lap 1 with Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35, the 91 of Adam Gullion and Chase Weiler’s 0 close behind. Grossenbacher and Gullion both got past Horton on lap 2. Gullion took over the top spot the next time around as Tim Hilfiker put the 20 into fourth. Grossenbacher hung on Gullion’s push bar and showed him his nose wing but remained in second for the time being. Mike Boston jumped to third in his 51 with 10 laps left as Hilfiker remained in fourth. Grossenbacher and Gullion traded slide jobs for a few laps until Grossenbacher snagged the lead with 3 to go as Toby Chapman put the 40X into fourth. Gullion fought until the end, throwing sliders at Grossenbacher and pulling almost even as they came to the finish line with Grossenbacher retaining the lead for the win with Gullion second, Boston third and Chapman fourth.

This year marked Grossenbacher’s return to racing after over a year off due to serious injuries in 2017. “That was probably one of the most fun races I’ve had since I’ve raced here, and that’s 11 years! That was fun. I don’t know how many times Adam and I passed each other, but it had to have been a lot. Coming to the checkered I didn’t see him until we were coming out of four. I caught a little bit of moisture and barely edged him out, so it was fun. I was beginning to worry at the beginning of the year because I was struggling. I was sure it was just in my head, so I really needed the win tonight. This race really got me going again. Now we need to just keep rolling and keep the rain away. I want to thank my parents, because I could never do this without them” related Grossenbacher. Grossenbacher’s sponsors include Rick Forbes Motorsports Stop ‘N Shop, True North Construction, Skytop Towers, WC’s South and Restore A Muscle Car.

Next up is the School’s Out Summer Shootout, presented by Hoosier Tire and the Lincoln Saltdogs.
