Grabowski,Borgman,Bade and Young Win Night 2 At Ice Beaker Challenge

By Greg Soukup

WOW! What more could you ask for? Night 2 of the 2019 Icebreaker Challenge presented by Auto Trans Matic saw near summer-like temperatures in the 80’s warming Eagle Raceway, over 130 cars in the pits and a fantastic night of competition that saw 3-wide racing all the way into the features!

No serious incidents occurred during the preliminary action.

The first A Feature saw the Sprint Series of Nebraska take to the high banks. Tyler Drueke put the #12 out front at the end of the first circuit followed by the 5X of Jason Martin, Toby Chapman in the 40X and Stu Snyder’s 5S. Lap 3 saw Josh Riggins move past Snyder to put the 14J into fourth. Jason Danley’s 4X stopped on lap 10 to bring out the yellow flag. Martin used the restart to move back into fourth. Lap 13 saw Shayle Bade pass Martin, moving the 03 to fourth. With 9 laps left Chapman moved up to second and Martin vaulted past Chapman the next time around grabbing second. Unfortunately Martin dame to a halt with 3 to go. At that time it was Drueke, Chapman, Bade and the 47 of Cody Ledger. Bade used the restart to move past Chapman for second. There were just 2 laps remaining when Ryan Kitchen’s 21 stopped in turns 1 and 2, setting up a green/white/checkered finish. Bade got a great run on the restart, getting past Drueke for the lead and holding on for the victory. The final top 4 were Bade, Drueke, Chapman and Ledger.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modifieds then took to the track. Lance Borgman’s 76, the 22 of Matthew Andrews, Lee Horky in the 21L and Shawn Harker’s 40 led the field after lap 1. Derek Hall looped the 44D in turns 1 and 2 on lap 2 for a caution. Horky made contact with the wall in 1 and 2 on lap 5, moving Harker up to third and putting the 6H of Jason Harms into fourth. Gunnar Pike passed Harms with 12 to go, moving up to fourth. Borgman was unchallenged from there to the finish, bringing home the W with Andrews, Harker and Pike rounding out the top 4.

Next was the last race of the evening for the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compacts. Josh Young’s 13J grabbed the initial lead with Steffen Oaks in the 17, Shawn Hein’s 5H and Cole Krichau in the 70SS close behind. Hein and Krichau swapped spots on lap 2. Oaks took over the lead on lap 5 as Hein again grabbed third. There were just 6 to go when Braydon Thornton smacked the front stretch wall HARD!!!! He was uninjured, but his night was finished as he was towed back

to the pits. Oaks retired to the pits also with a flat right front tire. At that time the top 4 were Young, Hein, Krichau and the 32X of Nathan Wahlstrom. Krichau moved up to second one lap after the restart. 2 laps later John Martinez put the 1X into third with Hein falling to fourth. The action slowed with 4 circuits remaining for a debris caution. Martinez passed Krichau 1 lap after the restart for second as Hein advanced to third again and Dillon Richards put the 84 into fourth. At the checkers it was Young, Martinez, Hein and Richards.

The finale to the weekend was for the Hoosier Tire IMCA Modifieds. Jordan Grabouski’s 30, the 01 of Jacob Hobscheidt, Mike Densberger in the 81 and Johnny Saathoff’s 96J were first back to the flag stand on lap 1. Saathoff and Densberger started a real battle over the next few laps. First Saathoff passed Densberger on lap 2, then Densberger got third back the next lap, lap 5 saw Saathoff grab the spot and Densberger taking it back on lap 9. 2 more laps were in the books when Anthony Roth put the 60IV into fourth. Chad Andersen’s 8C stopped in turns 1 and 2 on lap 12 to slow the action. Roth jumped up to second with 12 to go, setting up a battle royal with Grabouski. Roth tried high and low, getting close to Grabouski but never quite making the run to pass him. Hobscheidt spun in 1 and 2 with 6 to go, moving Bob Zoubek’s 5S into fourth. The final position change in the top 4 came with 6 to go when Ryan Jenkins passed Zoubek to put the 6 into fourth. The top 4 were Grabouski, Roth, Densberger and Jenkins.

By sweeping both A Features this weekend, Grabouski earned the Twice As Nice Challenge and pocketed another $1000 for his efforts.

It will be “All Wings, All of the Time” as the action resumes at Eagle Raceway this coming Thursday, April 25th as Track Enterprises presents the ASCS National Series, featuring the 360 Sprint Cars. Also on the card will be the Precise Racing Sprint Series of Nebraska Racesaver IMCA Sprints.
