Freedomfest 2014 wins go to Roth, Beckman, Roth, Moyer and Danley

By Greg Soukup

Freedomfest 2014, presented by Mud in America and Budweiser was held Saturday night at Eagle Raceway with probably the best weather of the year. Numerous other area tracks cancelled, lending extra race teams to the festivities.

All preliminary races were held with no serious incidents.

The first A Feature saw Josh Kennell’s 71K, the 22K of Kevin Anderson, Scott Bivens in the S56 and Nate Thompson’s 3T leading the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified field at the end of the first lap. Shawn Harker put the 40 into fourth on lap 3 after Bivens fell back, but Bivens regained the spot before the end of the lap. Trent Roth jumped all the way to 3rd on lap 4, putting the 14T in front of Harker who again moved to fourth. Roth again leaped up 2 spots, taking the lead on lap 7. That put Harker 3rd and Anderson fourth. Harker got into fourth the next lap. Lap 9 saw Blain Petersen move into third in his 68+1. Gary Saathoff moved to fourth in the 96 but lost the spot to Benji Legg’s 25B on the final circuit. Roth came home in first, Harker took second and Petersen and Legg rounded out the top 4.

“That’s a double for us! We don’t really have a home track, so we’ll be here on Saturdays when we can. We started out 10th, but got a really good start. The car really went fast tonight. I want to thank Roger because he works so hard to let us race. Also a big thanks to my Dad, Anthony, ‘Lil Sis’ and Kenny” Trent said. Roth’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Roth Racing, Midwest BBQ, HyVee, Ziebart, Cuba Construction and R & R Sandblasting and Painting.

Don Hall Jr. in the 92 and the 44 of John Cain got together on the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA A Main and both headed to the pits. Nick Beckman’s 22, Joe Wollenhaupt in the 4W, Don Kros’ 53 and the 13F of Chad Fegley led the first official lap with Fegley and Ben Becher’s B4 passing Kros the next time around. Fegley spun in turns 1 & 2 on lap 3 with Becher suffering damage also and both went to the pits. That made the top 4 Beckman, Wollenhaupt, Kros and the H44 of Caleb Hetrick. Hetrick moved around Kros on the restart and Justin Busboom also passed Kross the next lap, putting the 62 into fourth. Kros retook the spot on lap 8 when Busboom’s left front fender, which had been loosened in an earlier altercation finally came off and Busboom went pit side and the yellow lights were lit. Hetrick moved up to second on the restart. Kros moved up to third on lap 13 with Roy Armstrong moving the 6R into fourth the same lap. At the checkered flag it was Beckman, Hetrick, Kros and the 26X of Russ Specht.

This was Beckman’s first victory in 2014. “We’ve had a rough year for sure. I’m just glad we got the car straightened out enough to make it fast tonight. Thanks to Roger for getting the track into shape to give us a place to race. Also, I need to thank my family and friends for their help. Of course, I need to thank ‘Little Man’ for being here tonight” related Beckman. Beckman’s sponsors include Spyder Race Cars, J & N Technologies, the Beverage Connection, D-Sign Shop, Blind Spot Race Shops and Performance 66.

Clint Homan came past the flag stand first, putting the 27 out front of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified feature with Trevor Baker’s 25!, the 8C of Chad Andersen and Anthony Roth’s 60IV rounding out the top four after the first lap. Roth was on a mission, moving to third and then second on lap 2. Jesse Sobbing took the 99 into third on lap 3 and Johnny Saathoff took over fourth in the 96J. Roth got past Homan for the lead on lap 5. 5 laps later Roger Hadan’s #4 moved into the fourth spot. MR Hale’s 22K stopped in turn 2 with 8 to go for the first and only caution of the contest. Hadan moved up to third with 7 laps left and advanced to second with 3 to go. The top 4 were Roth, Hadan, Homan and Sobbing.

Anthony’s first victory at Eagle had him saying “This was fun!! I had to be patient, but stay up on the wheel. Down here the competition is so great. It’s fun racing with Jesse, and of course I love going against Shane’s Razor. I want to thank my sister who’s our photographer and of course my father for everything he does for us”. Anthony’s sponsors include AFCO, Pyrotect, HyVee, Razor Chassis, Roth Racing, Shell Valley, R & R, Total Eclipse and Ziebart.

Cole Krichau spun the 30K to the infield at the start of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A Feature, stopping it before it could officially start. Larry Cronin’s 30L, Tanner Schmitz’s 10, the 25 of Josh Johnson and James King in the 13 were the first 4 to the start/finish line on lap 1. Tim Horsham got a good run on lap 2, putting the 2 into fourth the second time around. Horsham moved up to 2nd the next circuit with Johnson retaining third. Matt Moyer put the 29 into fourth the next lap. Horsham took over the lead on lap 7 when Cronin slowed dramatically, but Cronin was put back out front when the caution lights came on. Moyer moved up to third with 8 to go and took over second with 4 to go. Moyer grabbed the lead the next lap. RJ Maas’ 88K stopped on the front stretch with 2 laps left for the final caution period of the race. Horsham regained second on the final lap with Johnson coming home third and Brandon Thornton’s 21T taking fourth.

This was Moyer’s second weekly win this season. “This was a real blast!!! I want to thank all of the other drivers for racing clean all year. That makes it more fun to win” Moyer stated. Moyer’s sponsors include General Siding, Luddeman Construction, Kinnersley Grading and Scott Angel with the D-Sign Shop.

For the third time on the evening, an A Feature was put under caution before a lap could be put into the books. Jason Rakes’ 27 jumped a tire on the 99 of Tony Rost and Rost went to the infield while the yellow flag flew in the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Feature. Richard Weers in the 55 led the first official lap with Shon Pointer’s 20P, Rakes and the 14G of Gene Ackland rounding out the top 4. Mike Boston in the 51 and the 4U of Dwight Carter made contact on lap 2. Carter spun out with Chase Weiler’s 21W and the 54X of Dustin Andersen getting collected. Boston kept going but was placed at the rear of the field due to his part in the altercation. Joey Danley moved the 14 into fourth on the restart. Lap 3 saw Matt Richards’ 44 catch a rut, start bicycling and end up flipping. Shayle Bade could not avoid the mess and ended up with Richards’ car on top of hers. Ackland jumped up to second on lap 4 with Danley grabbing third. Boston stopped in turn 2 on lap 7 for another caution. Terry Richards moved the #18 into fourth on lap 8. Doug Lovegrove’s #1 and Andersen spun out in turn 1 the next circuit. At that time the top 4 were Weers, Ackland, Danley and Richards. Danley and Richards both passed Ackland on the restart with Danley passing Weers on lap 13. 2 laps later Richards took over second from Weers. Ackland moved to third the next time around but Tadd Holliman in the 2N and Nick Bryan’s 52 got together on the front stretch with Holliman’s racer going flipping. On the restart Bryan spun in turn 2 and the race was called for time limit. The final top 4 were Danley, Richards, Weers and Ackland.

This was Danley’s first win in his first season in a Racesaver IMCA sprint car. When asked if he were happy about the race being called he stated “Sure! I wasn’t going to even come race tonight after getting wrecked last week, but I’m really glad that we did. Thanks to Dad, Jace, Mark, Allie, Fuzz, Jason for getting the car back together”. Danley’s sponsors include Bellevue University, Nissen Hardwood Floors, Super Saver, Automotive Services, Clean Rite Sweeping, JPS Investments and Mark Burch Motorsports.
