Eagle Shootout winners are Fegley, Deeke, Maas, Andersen & Martin
By Greg Soukup
Eagle Shootout, presented by Great Clips Saturday at Eagle Raceway saw a great crowd show up to watch as the season’s points champions were crowned.
The lone incident in the preliminary action saw the 91BC sprinter of Adam Gullion bicycle in turn 3 during the 4th heat for the Racesaver IMCA Sprints and end up flipping. Unfortunately, the car had too much damage to be repaired in time for the B Feature.
Dana Deeke took off from the outside of row 1 in the A Feature for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds to put the #36 out front of lap 1, followed by James Hines in the 31R, Mike Hansen’s 94 and the 6A of Adam Armstrong. Armstong passed Hansen on lap 2 and then took second on lap 4. Joe Feyen cracked the top 4 on lap 7, moving the 25X into that position. Feyen moved up to third the next time around as Arie Schouten oved the 99RE into fourth. With 7 to go the yellow lights came on as there was debris on the track. The restart failed for the same reason. Jason Harms made the final position change in the top 4 when he put his 6H into fourth with 6 laps remaining. The final top 4 were Deeke, Armstrong, Feyen and Harms.
This was Deeke’s first Sport Modified win at Eagle Raceway, in his 5th year in the class. “The track tonight, with the corrections we made had me very good tonight. It was nice and smooth. I really enjoy racing here. The competition is always great. I want to thank my crew Alex Deeke, Mike McKibben, Shane Hennesey and Tyler Deeke” said Deeke. Deeke’s sponsors include Spyder Race Cars, Kaser Blasting and Coating, Outlaw Raceway Park, Sardeson Racing, Agee’s Automotive, Weistar Towing, Baker Boys Racing, KB Art Works and Scott Angel at the D-Sign Shop.
Steve Shepard’s 20T, the 55N of Luke Nicholson, Cody Leifeld’s 24X and the 38C of Casey Moyer were leading the field at the completion of the first lap for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main. Moyer passed Leifeld for third on lap 2 but was forced to the infield and struck the implement tire in turn 4. As the yellow flag flew Steve Shepard’s 20T headed to the pits with a flat right rear tire and Moyer was given his position back. That moved Chad Fegley’s 13F into fourth. Fegley started moving forward, taking third on the restart and then passing Moyer for second and Nicholson for first after 2 more laps. Damon Richards jumped all of the way into second the next time around, putting Nicholson in third and Moyer into fourth. Leifeld got back into fourth on lap 10. Roy Armstrong made the final change in the top four, grabbing the third spot in his 6R on the final circuit. The top 4 were Fegley, Richards, Armstong and Nicholson.
“The car felt really good tonight, which is nice since I’ve been kind of fighting it lately. I’m happy with it though. The track was great tonight; nice and smooth up top. I want to say congratulations to all of the points champions. I’m really looking forward to an awesome weekend of racing next weekend at the Sprint Nationals” stated Fegley. Fegley’s sponsors include The Shop, Inc., FRE Racing Engines and Sapp Brothers.
Andrew Hille’s 31 led lap 1 of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified Feature with Jan Korth’s 42K, the 86 of Justin Wulf and Trevor Baker’s 25! rounding out the top 4. Wulf advanced to second on lap 2. Johnny Saathoff put the 96J into fourth on lap 3 and moved up to third 2 laps later. The next circuit saw Wulf grab the lead as Dustin Andersen put the 8A into fourth. Andersen advanced 1 spot the next 2 laps, moving to second. Bob Zoubek’s 33Z took over the fourth position with 10 to go. 2 laps following that Andersen took the lead. With 4 circuits remaining, Aaron Pella’s 3A stopped in turn 4. Saathoff moved up to second on the restart. Wulf and Saathoff exchanged the position over the next 2 laps with Saathoff ending up in the spot. Zoubek moved up to third on the final circuit, making the top 4 Andersen, Saathoff, Zoubek and Wulf.
“This has been a good year for us. The track was really good tonight; that new disc worked great! I started fourth row outside and didn’t really get moving until we hit traffic. I was pumped up, but knew I had to stay smooth and consistent. This win goes to my dad Terry; I want to send a big shout-out to him. Thank you to all of the people who have helped me this year, and a special thanks to Shane Hiatt for all of his help” related Andersen. Andersen’s sponsors include Lawnsmith, Nebraska’s Best, Flat Foot Trucking, Southern Transport and the D-Sign Shop.
The Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compact A Main had Kyle Grobeck lead lap 1 in his 42G with Nick Morris’s 11H the 88 of Michelle Nicholson and Shawn Hein’s 5H close behind. RJ Maas moved the 88K into fourth on lap 3 and moved to third the next time around with Nicholson holding fourth. Grobeck slowed the next lap with a flat tire, heading to the pits. That moved everyone up a spot with Amanda Rhiley inheriting the fourth position in her 51. Rhiley quickly moved up to third. Morris slowed and headed pit side with 5 to go putting Sarah Cronin’s 8 into fourth. Cronin advanced to third with 3 to go as Cole Krichau put the 30K into fourth. Krichau moved up to third on the last lap, making the final top 4 Maas, Rhiley, Krichau and Cronin.
This was Maas’ first Eagle Raceway victory, coming from the outside of row 4 on the starting grid. He said “FINALLY!! We had a good track tonight; nice and tacky. It was amazing in fact; the best one in a long time. I started moving up, then when I got to third I started to reel in the 11H. When he dropped out I started checking the scoreboard to see how many laps were left. I want to thank my dad Rocky, plus Spencer and Lou Pavey. Also ‘Little Man’ Will Kyler”. Maas’s sponsors include RJ’s Bar and Grill, My Bar, Shop Qwik, Checkered Flag, Bentzinger Tire, Birkett Farms and Lamb Electric.
The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Feature saw Brandon Horton in the 1B, Dwight Carter’s 4U, the 14 of Joey Danley and Nick Bryan’s 52 lead lap 1. Greg Bolte passed Bryan on lap 2, putting the 00 into fourth. Jason Martin’s 5X took over fourth on lap 4 as Danley grabbed second. Martin moved up to third after another lap. Tyler Drueke cracked the top 4 on lap 7 in his #12. The next lap saw Martin pass Horton for second, but lose the spot to Danley after another lap and take it back after 1 more circuit. Martin then grabbed the lead on lap 11. Shayle Bade’s 03 suffered front end damage, ending up in the infield the next time around as Gene Ackland’s 14G stopped on the front stretch. That made the running order Martin, Horton, Danley and Drueke. Danley moved past Horton for second with 9 to go, but lost the spot to Drueke the next time around. Trevor Grossenbacher put the 35 into fourth with 6 circuits remaining. Danley spun in turn 2 on the final lap, making the final top 4 Martin, Drueke, Grossenbacher and Shon Pointer’s 20P.
This marked Jason’s second Eagle Raceway victory in 2016, coming from 12th at the start. “The track has been really good this year. I lost my brakes with about 10 to go, so I started cruising. But, I started listening to make sure I didn’t hear anyone getting close to me, but I never did. I had a really consistent EMI chassis, just like my other one. It’s going to be a toss-up to decide which one to run next weekend at the Sprint Nationals. I want to thank All Star Dent and Detail for coming on board with us recently” related Martin. Martin’s sponsors include All Star Dent and Detail, Midwest Linings and Trucks Plus.
