Driver Appreciation Night victories by Roth, Armstrong, Hiatt, Cronin and Boston

By Greg Soukup

The Slingin’ Dirt Run-Driver Appreciation Night Saturday at Eagle Raceway saw a big car count of over 150 in the pits and a huge fan turnout in the grandstands on a night that was nearly too good to be believed. The weather was great and the racing was even better.

The only significant happening in the preliminary races came when the 21W of Chase Weiler went for a ride after contact with Greg Bolte’s 00 in the third heat for the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars.

Matt Boucher held the lead in the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature in the 5B and Randy Fox’s 09RX, the 44D of Derek Hall and Shawn Harker’s 40 rounded out the top 4. Fox took over first and Fox grabbed second with the third spot going to Dana Deeke’s 36 on lap 2 in a huge shuffle of the front-runners when Boucher suffered a flat right front tire and went to the pits on lap 3, resulting in a caution. That put the 56 of Blake Haas in fourth. Joe Schidler’s K00 and the 67D of Jason Trent spun at the flag stand on the restart. Ken Eckhoff moved past Haas on the restart to grab fourth. The yellow flag flew again on the next circuit for debris. Lap 5 saw yet another caution when Rod Schreiner in the 21R and the 21 of Josh Blumer spun in turns 1 & 2. Deeke took over 2nd on lap 7. Trent Roth took his 14T past Eckhoff on lap 8 before Benji Legg also got past Eckhoff in the 25B the same lap while Roth moved to third. Haas spun the next lap and Hall went to the pits. That made the running order Fox, Deeke, Roth and Legg. Roth got past Deeke on the restart. Eckhoff again moved to fourth on lap 13 as Roth took over the lead. Legg re-took the fourth spot the next lap. There were just 3 laps left when Legg moved to third and Kyle Flodman moved to fourth. Dustin Thayer spun his 10T with 2 lap left in turns 1 & 2. Legg advanced to second and Flodman moved to third as Joe Feyen put the 25X into fourth on the restart making the top 4 Roth, Legg, Flodman and Feyen.

This is Trent’s first Eagle Raceway win in only his 2nd year of racing a sport modified and came after transferring from the B Feature and starting 16th. “I love this track, it’s my favorite place to go!” related Roth. “It’s always nice to win in front of such a great crowd, and I really appreciate all of the support from the fans”. Roth’s sponsors include Ziebart Rhino Lining, Cuba Construction, Razor Chassis and Roth Racing.

Aaron Johnston’s 67, the 22 of Nick Beckman, Gerald Higgins’27J and Tim Kozak’s 29 were the first to reach the flag stand on lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature. Beckman moved past Johnston while Kozak and the 44 of John Cain both passed Higgins on lap 2 before Joe Wollenhaupt’s 4W lost the rear axle and rolled collecting the 81M of Nathan Meyer. At that time the top 4 were Beckman, Johnston, Higgins and the 60 of Kevin Zeitner. Zeitner moved to third on the restart and took over second the next time around. Cain moved to fourth and then third over the next two laps and Chad Fegley got the 13F into fourth when Beckman spun to the infield with a flat right rear. That made the top 4 Zeitner, Cain, Fegley and the 94 of Mike Hansen. Hansen and Roy Armstrong in the 6R both passed Fegley the next circuit. With 9 laps left Cain grabbed the lead and Armstrong moved up to second. Hansen took third and Fegley fourth with 7 to go. Cain lost his right front wheel with 6 laps left and came to a jolting halt in the pit entrance road. Another lost wheel, this time a right rear caused the final caution of the race when it happened to Zeitner. That put the 93 of RJ Macku into fourth. At the end it was Armstrong, Hansen, Fegley and Macku.

This was Armstrong’s 4th win at Eagle this season. “I want to thank all of the fans who showed up tonight for this special event. It was great seeing them all” he said. He finished by stating “The track ended up really fast. I was just patient and worked my way through”. Roy’s sponsors include Neapco and B & D Motorsports.

Next was the A Main for the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds. Anthony Roth’s 60 was first at the end of lap 1 with Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 8 of Chad Anderson and Scott Bivens’ S56 rounding out the top 4. Anderson passed Thompson on lap 2. Shane Hiatt moved the 21H into fourth on lap 4 before jumping up to third the next lap when Roth suffered a flat right front tire and went to the pits. At that time it was Anderson, Thompson, Hiatt and Bivens. Chris Alcorn moved past Bivens on the restart to put the 3 in fourth as Hiatt moved up to second. Alcorn also passed Thompson the next lap and lap 8 Roger Hadan got his #4 into fourth. Hiatt took the lead on lap 9 as Hadan took over third. Dylan Smith cracked the top 4 with 9 laps left in his #95. Smith took 2 laps before getting into 3rd then to second after 2 more circuits. The final change in the top 4 came when Hadan moved up to third with 3 to go. At the checkers it was Hiatt, Smith, Hadan and Alcorn.

The win was Hiatt’s second this season and came after starting 7th. “I just wanted to get out front as soon as I could. Then I used the track up as much as I could to keep the others behind me” Hiatt related. “It was a great race between Chad and me. I used the high line and when he finally made a little mistake I took advantage. I was just glad there were no cautions because my car kept getting tighter”. His last thoughts were “It’s always awesome to run in front of so many fans, and I can’t thank Roger enough for a great place to race at. Also I want to thank Travis Roth and Razor Chassis, John Eaton from Jono’s Racing Engines, my mom and dad, my brother Shawn and Kyle Schamp”. Shane’s sponsors include Roth Racing, Razor Chassis, Jono’s Motors, Benes Service, 3H Trucking, Knuth Farms, J & K Motorsports, KC Auto Supply, Valish Daycare, Wetlands Bar & Grill, Want Trucking, Jones Racing, DSR, Integra Shocks & Springs and Danny Fuller from CPD Racing Products.

Melissa Cronin’s 5M led the first lap of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact main event with the 5S of Paul Stellato, the 3J of Jeremy Baker and Erica Cronin’s 30 close behind. Erica moved up to third on lap 5 as Sydney Yost in the 20 took over fourth. With 4 laps left Brian Haller spun the 2CS in turn 4. On the restart Ole Olsen got the 23 into fourth when Yost spun and collected Baker. The restart saw Stellato barrel-roll 6 times in turn 1 to bring out the red flag. Stellato was transported to the hospital but his condition was not known at the time of this report. Larry Cronin moved his #5 to third in the mess and Yost again took over fourth when Erica Cronin went to the pits. Yost held the position until her hood flew up with 3 to go. That made the final top 4 Melissa Cronin, Olsen, Larry Cronin and Chad Bassinger.

This was Melissa’s first feature win. “I want to thank Larry and Cole for keeping my car running. We had a lot of troubles the past couple of years but looks like they fixed them” Melissa said. She finished the interview by stating “The win couldn’t have happened at a better time. Tonight was the first time ever my grandma came out, plus all of my family were here too. Thanks to all of the thousands of fans who showed up. It’s fun to race in front of so many people”. Melissa’s sponsor is Larry’s Auto Recycling.

Then the Budweiser Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars moved onto the track for the final A Feature. Richard Weers spun the 55 in turn 2 on lap 1, collecting the 14G of Gene Ackland and the red lights were lit. The first official lap saw Lee Bowes out front in the 73, Lacey Tuttle in the 50, the 4U of Dwight Carter and Clint Benson in the 100 the top four. Benson passed Carter on lap 2 for third as Dan Satriano put the 95 into fourth past Carter. Benson advance 1 more spot on the next lap. Mike Boston grabbed fourth on lap 4 before taking third the next time around and snaring the lead on lap 7. Benson took over second on lap #9 as 73 spun to the infield but kept going. The red flag flew however when Shayle Bade flipped in turns 3 & 4, destroying her racer. She was unhurt. That made the top 4 Boston, Bowes, Benson and Tuttle. The restart saw Benson again pass Bowes and Terry Richards move up to fourth. Richards again advanced with 8 to go to move to third. The next circuit saw Tuttle again take over fourth. At the end it was Boston, Benson, Richards and Tuttle.

“This was a good night on a great track” Boston said. He concluded by stating “Roger puts in so much time and care into the track. Tonight was a great example, after all of the rain we had. If Roger and the track crew didn’t work so hard we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. Thanks go out to them”. Boston’s sponsors include Moock Trucking, Johnson Farms and Woods Performance.
