The large crowd at the DIRTy Bird Shootout, presented by Kaplan University and Sam’s Club Saturday night arrived under very warm conditions. But, the racing for the season-long points championships gave the fans plenty to keep them anxiously anticipating the next race.
Joe Schidler got sideways in his NAPA IMCA Sport Modified heat and ended up hitting one of the implement tires marking the infield and rolled his racer over.

Neil Dvorak also ended up going over as he jumped the cushion in the first heat for the Mud In America Racesaver ICMA Sprint Car heat. Neither driver was seriously injured.

Trent Roth spun on the first lap of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified Feature. When the first lap was officially recorded Joe Baker’s 9X, Jason Trent’s 67D, Jared Cote in the 57 and Sean Manning’s 52 were the top 4. Lap 2 saw the top 2 in points for the Sport Modifieds involved in a tangle. Both Benji Legg’s 25B and the 96 of Gary Saathoff were in a pile-up in turn 2 along with Cameron Meyer’s 21. Meyer continued, but both Saathoff and Legg went to the pits. Legg returned later in the race, ran 1 lap and pulled in again. That was, however enough to earn him the points championship. Scott Bivens moved past Manning on lap 4, putting the S56 into fourth. Bivens moved to third on lap 7 and then to 2nd 2 laps later. Rick Rohr’s 74 moved into fourth on lap 9 also. Adam Vrbka spun the 7V in turn 2 with just 4 to go. Manning again moved to fourth with 4 left. Vrbka again looped it with 3 to go, stopping in turn 4. Gunnar Pike’s G25 spun in turn 4 and Trent slowed dramatically with 1 circuit remaining. Rohr moved back to fourth on the restart and even moved up to third before the lap was over. The move that put the crowd on their feet though came on the final lap when Bivens passed Baker for the lead in the final corner. The top 4 ended up being Bivens, Baker, Rohr and Manning.

This was Bivens’ third win, coupled with 7 second place finishes and came after starting ninth. “That was a good show. This was the first time that my son was here to see a victory. The track was a little rough, but racy!” said Bivens. Bivens’ sponsors include Spyder Race Cars, Palmyra Pub, Sardeson Racing, Middle Creek Services and Bivens Vinyl Siding.

The first laps of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Troy Mabbit’s T2 out front, Tim Kozak’s 29 second, the 22 of Nick Beckman third and fourth was Chad Fegley in the 13F. Mabbit fell to fourth on lap 2. Fegley grabbed the lead the next time around as RJ Macku put the 93 into fourth. Fegley suffered a flat tire the next lap, moving Roy Armstrong’s 6R into fourth. Macku grabbed the lead after another lap as Armstrong advanced to second. Beckman slowed dramatically the next circuit, putting Jason Kohl’s 27 into fourth. Armstrong took over the lead on lap 8 as Kohl moved up into third. Macku regained the top spot on lap 12 before giving it back to Armstrong 2 laps later. Macku and Armstrong came together hard on the back stretch on lap 16, allowing Adam Armstrong to put the 6A into second and John Cain to take third in the 44 while Macku held fourth. The top 4 at the checkers were Kohl, Adam Armstrong, Cain and Macku. However, Macku was placed last due to the contact with Roy Armstrong. That put Justin Busboom’s 62 into fourth.

Kohl’s 2nd victory of 2014 came from his 10th starting spot. “1 and 2 were kind of rough tonight, so you had to work your way around. I just had to be patient. You can only do what you can do. I want to thank my wife, my children and parents for supporting me. They and my sponsors are why I can do this” related Kohl.

Mike Densberger’s 81 slammed sideways into the large implement tire guarding the pits on the start of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified A Main. Chad Andersen led lap 1 in his 8C while Dana Dankert’s 5, the V45 of Rik Gropp and Stacey Wilhelm’s 3W rounded out the top 4. Gropp moved up to second on lap 2 and Wilhelm also passed Dankert on lap 4 to take third. Lap 7 saw Justin Wulf’s 86 crack the top 4. Wulf advanced to third with 9 left and took over second with 6 laps remaining. The top 4 ended up Andersen, Wulf, Gropp and Wilhelm

This was Andersen’s first 2014 win at Eagle and came after starting fourth. “The track was really fast. Once I got to the front I decided to just have at ér!” said Andersen. Andersen’s sponsors include Flat Foot Trucking, Andersen Trucking, Runner Freight, Nelson Tree Service, Renner Wraps, Integra Shocks and Razor Chassis.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A Feature’s initial circuit saw Kyle Owens’ 10K, the 2CS of Brian Haller, Melissa Cronin in the 5M and Luke Jackson’s 66 out front. A debris caution slowed the action on lap 3. Ramsey Meyer passed Jackson on the restart, putting the 21R into fourth but Jackson got back past him before the flag stand. Evan Hrabik’s 19X stopped in turn 1 on lap four for another caution. Meyer jumped all the way to second on lap 5. Tim Horsham put the #3 into fourth on lap 7, but was passed for the position by the 29 of Matt Moyer. Moyer advanced to third the next lap. Meyer took over the lead on lap 10 as Horsham again took fourth. Moyer passed Owen on the final lap to make the top 4 Meyer, Moyer, Owen and Horsham.

This marked Meyer’s third Eagle Raceway win this season after beginning in the 12th spot. “Somehow the pack just parted and I drove right through the middle of them! The track was great! Fun and fast for sure. I want to congratulate Matt Moyer on another track championship” Meyer stated. Meyer’s sponsors include Taylor’s Bar and Grill, Norfolk Transmission, Charger Chassis, Demon Decals, Renner Auto Body’s Awesome Alignments, Pierce Auto Body and Tom’s Service.

Josh Riggins’ 14JR, Brandon Horton’s 1B, Keith Dragoo in the 77D and Toby Chapman’s 1BX led the field after 1 lap of the Mud In America Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car Main Event. Horton moved to the lead on lap 2 and Chapman advanced to third before taking over second the next lap as Shayle Bade moved the 03 all the way up to third. Chapman took the lead and Bade moved to second on lap 3 with Adam Gullion’s 91 taking over the fourth spot. Bade advanced to second on lap 7 and Terry Richards put the 18 into fourth. Richards moved up to third on lap 9. Jason Martin cracked the top four on lap 10, taking the position with the 5X. Kyle Flodman jumped the cushion in his 7K on lap 13 and ended up rolling over in turn 4 after hitting the wall. Martin moved up to third on the restart. As the cars started the final lap Chase Weiler’s 21W spun in turn 4. Martin passed Bade briefly on the restart, but gave the spot back before the end of the lap. Tadd Holliman’s 45T and the 14 of Joey Danley spun in turn 4 with 1 lap left to light the yellow lights and set up another green/white/checkered finish. Bade challenged Chapman several times over the next two circuits and ended up passing him for the victory on the final lap.

Bade became the very first female to win a sprint car A Feature in Eagle’s history. “The biggest thing I want to say is thank you to my crew and sponsors for sticking with me despite all of the garbage I’ve pulled this season. Without them all, I couldn’t be here at all. Also, thanks to the fans for being so awesome! Last, thank you to the track prep and safety crews for busting their humps every week to give us a great place to run” Bade said. Bade’s sponsors include Onyx. Busch Lite, The Single Barrel, MDR, Rowe Design, Talon Buildings and J Rich Clothing.
