Dirt Mania Night, presented by Colby Ridge and The Ticket saw an almost perfect night for racing, and the racing was better than the weather! At intermission children 12 and under were treated to rides in the competitors’ race cars for a trip around the high banks of Eagle Raceway.

In the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact B Feature, the 29X of Aunna Ray Morford and the 14XM of Tommy Etherton got together, sending Morford hard into the turn 4 wall. Morford was taken to the pits in the ambulance, but was not transported.
Anthony Kobus’ 27 led the first circuit of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature, followed by Jeremy Noonan in the 33, Roger Sluka’s 5S and the 3T of Nate Thompson. Noonan snagged the lead on lap 2 with Thompson moving to third and the S56 of Scott Bivens moving into fourth. Bivens jumped up to second the next lap, but Blain Petersen spun the 68+1 for a yellow flag. Bivens again moved up to second on the restart, but this time Joe Schidler looped the K00 in turn 2. On this restart Bivens’ advance to second stuck with Benji Legg putting the 25B into fourth. Bivens took the lead the next lap. Thompson took over the third spot on lap 6. Legg passed Thompson after another circuit, and then advanced to second before the lap finished. Trent Roth’s 14T cracked the top 4 on lap 10, and he moved up to third with 5 to id go. Legg took over the lead with just 4 laps left. Shawn Harker spun the 40 in turn 4 with 3 laps left. Adam Vrbka made the final change in the top 4 when he put the 7V into fourth with just 2 circuits remaining. Legg, Bivens, Roth & Vrbka were the top 4.

This was Legg’s 7th victory of the 2014 season, and allowed him to retain the points lead going into the final week of the regular season. “I was so nervous to start the night, because the track was so different in the heat. I was watching before our feature, and Johnny (Saathoff) said to just keep doing the same things I’d been doing. So, I took his advice and went out and won. I think I just need to make the A next weekend and get a respectable finish to win the points. But that’s going to be tough. Gary is so consistent here every week” Legg said.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw John Bruegman’s 64 out front with Tyler Saathoff’s 16T, the 1 of Tim LaPointe and Rob Brown in the 42 rounding out the top 4. Saathoff slowed on lap 2, moving LaPointe and Brown up and putting the 23 of Mark McKinney into fourth. Chad Fegley passed McKinney on lap 4 to put the 13F into fourth, but slowed with a flat tire on lap 5 allowing Mike Hansen to take fourth in his 94. The yellow lights were lit on lap 6 when Russ Specht’s 26X stopped in turn 1. Hansen moved to third on the restart with McKinney regaining fourth. Hansen moved up to second the next time around but gave the spot back to LaPointe before they got back to the flag stand. Nick Beckman spun the 22 in turn 4 on lap 8 for another caution. Bruegman headed to the pits before the race could restart, making the top 4 LaPointe, Hansen, McKinney and Brown. Hansen took the lead on the restart. John Cain put the 44 into fourth the next lap. Lap 12 saw Cain grab the second spot as Roy Armstrong jumped to third in the 6R with Hansen taking fourth. Cain took over the lead with 4 laps left and a moved to second the next lap. The final top 4 were Cain, Armstrong, Hansen and RJ Macku who had gained fourth in the closing laps.

Cain left before he could be interviewed.

Aaron Pella’s 3A, Jan Korth’s 42K, the 11N of Nathan Landauer and Matt Boucher’s 5B were the top 4 at the end of lap #1 of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified A. Boucher moved to third on lap 2 as Jared Hoefelman put the 15H into fourth. Hoefelman advanced to third the next lap and Mike Densberger also passed Boucher on lap 4 to take fourth. Fourth position then went to Roger “Chevy” Hadan on lap 7 when he put the #4 there. Boucher stopped in turn 2 on lap 8. Hoefelman moved up to second on the restart. Hadan took over the third position the next lap as Hoefelman grabbed the lead. Lap 12 saw Hadan move up to third and Densberger took fourth before going into third the next lap and grabbing second with 6 to go. Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth the next circuit. Hadan took second with 4 laps remaining before passing Hoefelman the next lap. Hadan held on for the win, with Hoefelman second, Densberger third and Hiatt fourth.

This was Hadan’s first Eagle Raceway win in 2014. “I usually run the bottom. I was trying to be patient and stay there, but when I saw Mike I knew I had to do something else. The bottom wasn’t working anymore, so I headed up top and moved to the front” related Hadan. Hadan’s sponsors include Cubby’s, Auto TransMatic, Accelerated GraphX and Advanced Suspension.

The first four to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Sam’s Club IMCA A Main were the 82B of Kurt Beckstrom, Brian Haller in the 2CS, Sarah Cronin’s 8 and the 5M of Melissa Cronin. Larry Cronin jumped up to third in the 30L on lap 2 and then advanced to second the next time around with Melissa Cronin retaining fourth. Matt Moyer took over fourth in his 29 the next lap. Sarah Cronin stopped in turn 2 with 4 to go for a caution. Larry Cronin took over the lead with 3 to go. Moyer took over second the next lap with Cole Krichau moving to third in the 5K and Tim Horsham’s #3 holding fourth.

“I honestly didn’t think I could do it. I thought maybe Cole would beat me in my regular car. I need to thank my family and friends for their support, and I couldn’t do it without my sponsors” said Cronin. Cronin’s sponsors include Larry’s Auto Recyclers and Moonlight Ranch.

Mark Vanderheiden’s 15V, the 4U of Dwight Carter, Kyle Flodman’s 7K and the 55 of Richard Weers led the first lap of the Mud In America Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car Feature. Carter passed Vanderheiden for the lead on lap 2 and Flodman also got past Vanderheiden on lap 3. Weers took over the lead on lap 6 with Adam Gullion taking second in the 91. The next lap saw Shayle Bade put the 03 into fourth. Bade moved up to third on lap 10 when Weers and Eric Reichwaldt’s 13 stopped at the top of turn 4. That made the top 4 Gullion, Flodman, Bade and the 14G of Gene Ackland. Bade passed Flodman on the restart for second. Bade jumped the cushion in turn 2 on lap 13, brushing and then partially climbing the wall. She then hit the back stretch wall very hard and was through for the evening. That put the 1BX of Toby Chapman into fourth. Ackland moved up to second with 11 to go and Doug Lovegrove jumped into third the next time around. Terry Richards put the 18 into fourth with 9 to go. Gregg Bolte’s 00 slowed and stopped with 4 to go. Weers stopped in turns 1 & 2 on the restart for yet another caution. Chapman regained fourth with 3 circuits remaining. Lovegrove moved to second with 2 to go. At the finish, it was Gullion, Lovegrove, Ackland and Chapman. Ackland and Chapman were both disqualified following the race, making the official top 4 Gullion, Lovegrove, Richards and the 100 of Clint Benson.

This was Gullion’s first Racesaver sprint car feature victory. “I got to thinking before the race started, so I started searching for something special; just the right spot to run. I tried running high into 1 on a caution, but it was rough. So, the next time I went above the cushion and found my spot. Then, when I got the lead I kind of over drove the car a little. So, I calmed myself down. I knew if I just hit my marks that I’d be good. Starting next week we are holding a raffle for the chance to hot lap my sprinter at the Nebraska Cup. All proceeds will go to Bristol Hiatt” said Gullion. Gullion’s sponsors include Precise Roofing, Liquid Nitro, Filly Custom Powder Coating, Bryan’s Auto Body, Simpson, Super Shox, Butlerbuilt Seats, The Brake Man, Asa Triplette Landscaping and Brenning Painting.

Next weekend’s DIRTy Bird Shootout, presented by Kaplan University and Sam’s Club will be the regular season finale and will decide the points champions in all classes. The Mud In America Racesaver IMCA Sprints, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts will be competing.
