Dare to be Aware! Night sees Harder, Richards, Smith, Olsen and Snyder win

By Greg Soukup

Dare to be Aware! Night at Eagle Raceway Saturday night had what you want for everyone. A great track, great racing and great fun for everyone. Cars running two and lots of times three wide around the high banks showed why “America’s Home Track” is where you should be each and every Saturday during the summer. During intermission, the young fans in the crowd were given their chance to compete on the track as they vied for trophies on their bicycles.

All preliminary events were run with no serious incidents.

Joe Schidler in the K00, Denny Ray Berghan Jr.’s 6, Marty Steinbach in the 5 and Benji Legg aboard the 25B were the top four at the end of lap 1 of the Napa IMCA Sport Modified A Feature. Berghahn Jr. grabbed the lead on lap 2. The next lap saw the first caution of the race when Ryan Munhall spun his #29X in turns 1 & 2. Steinbach moved up to second on the restart lap and then grabbed the lead the next circuit. Legg advanced one spot to third the following circuit. One more lap in the books saw Max Harder move the 34 into the top 4 buy Munhall again spun in 1 & 2. Steve Swarthout in the 23 and Lindsey Yost in the 20 stopped in turn 3 on the restart. Harder again moved into fourth on lap 8. Munhall stopped in turns 3 and 4 on lap 10 to slow the action once again. Harder took third on lap 13 and then moved to second the next lap. Yost spun her racer in turns 1 & 2 on lap 17 to bring out another caution. At that time, the running order for the top 4 were Steinbach, harder, Berghahn Jr. and Legg. Harder snagged the top spot on lap 18 as Legg advanced to third. Steinbach gave up the lead on the final lap as he spun in turn four, giving the win to Harder. That put Gary Saathoff’s 96 into fourth. Legg refused a claim after the race, resulting in a disqualification. The official top 4 were Harder, Berghahn Jr., Saathoff and the 13K of Anthony Kobus.

“The track was nice and smooth tonight. It was really racy, with 2 lanes. You could run the top or bottom and be fast” Harder said. “I got lucky with that one yellow, because Marty was long gone, but it was a great race” he continued. Lastly, he stated “I need to thank so many people for this win. Russell, Kelly, my mom, my sister Andrea and Steve Swarthout. And then there’s my new ‘Munchkin crew’ Junk and Tyler. And I don’t want to leave out my lucky Lance Borgman shirt”. Harder’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Jet Racing, Garth Seeds, Schmidt Farms, Team Aron and Schlake Motorsports.

The second A Main was for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Damon Richards was the first back to the flag stand in the 68 followed by the 18 of Tim LaPointe, Don Kros in the 53 and the 12 of Dan Noonan. Justin Busboom got the #62 past Noonan on lap 2. The next lap saw Lee Kracht in the 10K, Roy Armstrong’s 6R and the 6B of Travis Burger stopped in a tangle to light the yellow lights. Kros passed LaPointe on the restart and Chad Fegley put his 13F in the top 4 then next lap. Ben Becher jumped up to third on lap 12 in the B4 as LaPointe again moved to fourth . A couple more laps saw Nick Beckman put the 22 into fourth, but gave the spot to the 97M of Mark Saathoff a couple of laps later. Saathoff moved to third the next circuit as Beckman moved back to fourth. Beckman overtook Saathoff the next time around to take third. At the finish it was Richards, Kros, Beckman and Saathoff.

“I can’t believe it, it feels like a dream!” Richards stated. “The motor was pulling a lot better this week, running on 8 cylinders. We broke some plug wires last week, but still got the win” he continued. He finished the interview by saying “The track was a lot smoother tonight, but it was tricky. By feature time it was dry slick AND tacky. You had to be sure to hit the right spots”. Damon’s sponsors include his father (Charger Chassis), Demon Decals, Husker Steel, Bongers Auto, Sop EZ, Kats Car Wash and TR’s Tool Service.

Doug Deterding’s 13 led the first lap of the RevHoney IMCA Modified Main event with Shane Hiatt in the 21H, Mike Densberger’s 81, the 1X of Chris Ableson and Clint Homan in the 27 in hot pursuit. Hiatt grabbed the lead on lap 2 as Ableson took third. Justin Wulf’s 86, the 11AA of Ed Raines and Densberger spun to a stop in turns 1 & 2 and the yellow flag came out. That made the top 4 Hiatt, Deterding, Ableson and Homan. Ableson used the restart to move to second and 2 laps later Hiatt’s racer began smoking and slowed putting Ableson in the lead. Homan moved to second the next lap as Johnny Saathoff vaulted his 96J to third. The next lap saw Dylan Smith crack the top four and Saathoff took second the next circuit as Smith moved to third. Smith moved up to second on lap 11. 3 laps later Lance Borgman moved into fourth 3 laps later. Lap 16 saw Saathoff jump over the left front of a car, resulting in a flat tire and sending him to the pits. Smith passed Ableson on the restart and held on for the lead as Bob Zoubek got the 5S into third in the waning laps. At the checkers it was Smith, Ableson, Zoubek and Borgman.

Smith said “We had back luck AGAIN in our heat with that flat tire, and that had us starting in the back of the B. But, we got some lucky breaks and won it to start 17th in the A Feature. They said I passed 34 cars in the two races, but got more lucky breaks in the A. We got into lapped traffic and I picked the right lanes. Chris had a big lead, but somehow I managed to catch him and finally pass for the win”. Dylan’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Active Life Chiropractic, Icon Racing Pistons, DSR, Eckley Racing Engines, Pinnacle Agency, Vrbka Ag Solutions, Circle Racing Wheels, Bilstein, Hypercoil, Moser Engineering and ISP Seats.

The Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact A Feature was up next and had Nic Hitz’s 11 lead lap #1 followed by the 3 of Tim Horsham, Jesse Osmon’s 4A and Barry Kinnersley in the 00. Kinnersley moved past Osmon on lap 2 and Osmon was passed by Ole Olsen’s #23 on lap 6 also to put Olsen in 4th but the yellow flag flew when Melissa Cronin’s 5M, the 48 of Kevin Fearing and Erica Cronin’s 30 stopped in turns 1 & 2. The restart saw Horsham go very high in turns 3 and 4 allowing Kinnersley to grab second, Kenny Roberts take third in the 69 and Olsen again move to fourth. Roberts dropped out on lap 7, putting Horsham into fourth. Olsen passed Kinnersley for second on lap 9 and took the lead with 3 to go as Kyle Gannon brought the 66G into the top 4. Hitz pulled into the pits the next lap, giving the fourth position to the 4X of Chad Bassinger. At the finish the top 4 were Olsen, Kinnersley, Gannon and Bassinger.

Olsen left before he could be interviewed.

The last Feature was for the Budweiser 360 Sprint Cars. Stu Snyder used his front row starting position to put the 23S into the lead at the end of lap 1 with Mitchell Moore’s 91, the 77 of John Klabunde and Jason Danley’s 82 rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 saw contact resulting in the 52 of Nick Bryan, the 33 of Terry Cadwallader and Roger Sluka’s X29 stop in turn 1. Mike Boston moved the #51 to fourth on lap 3 and passed Klabunde for third 2 laps later. The yellow lights were lit again on lap 12 when Jeff Osborn did a 360 degree spin in turns 1 & 2. At that time the top 4 were Snyder, Moore, Boston and Klabunde. Jay Russell passed Klabunde on the restart to put the 76 in the fourth position. Cadwallader spun again on lap 18 in turns 1 and 2 and the field slowed. The next caution came on lap 19 as Mark Schmidt’s 9J spun in turns 1 and 2 as did Cadwallader. The final caution flag of the evening flew on lap 24 as Tyler Drueke slipped up and spun at the top of turns 1 and 2 to set up a green/white/checkered finish to the racing. The top 4 were all running the cushion on the high side of the track, bouncing off of the Armco in turns 1 and 2 and the last position change of the night in the top 4 came when Doug Lovegrove passed Russell in the last 2 laps. The top 4 pulling to the front stretch were Snyder, Moore, Boston and Lovegrove.

“I want to thank my pit crew for the win tonight, because they’re the ones who did it. When the first feature was running we noticed that the rear end was leaking, and there were several holes in it. We had to really rush to get it changed for our race” Snyder related. He continued by saying “It helps to start up front, but then you have to stay there, and with the competition here, that’s not easy!”. He finished the interview by stating “Thanks to Roger and the crew for the great track tonight, and I can’t thank Eldon and Paula Rhoten enough for letting me run for them”. Stu’s sponsors include Simpson Racing Products, Van Dyne Engineering, Wayne Lewis, Shakers Gentleman’s Club, Davidson Plumbing and Welding, DFS Fabrication, Source One Powder Coating and Justin Haase.
