Danley, Grabouski, Carter, Andrews & Masek conquer Stars & Stripes Shootout

Danley, Grabouski, Carter, Andrews & Masek conquer Stars & Stripes Shootout

by Greg Soukup

We all know that July in Nebraska can mean a scorcher of a day, and that is exactly what we got Saturday night at Eagle Raceway as Pepsi, Coors Light and Great Clips presented Stars and Stripes Shootout. High temperatures usually mean a dry, dusty racing surface but thanks to a LOT of hours by the track prep crew and thousands of gallons of water there were 2 and sometimes 3 racing lines right up through the final lap of the last race.

There were 3 serious incidents in the preliminary racing, all of them in the Duros Dent Works Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car heats. In heat #1 Alex Davenport flipped the #25A in turns 1 and 2. Heat 3 saw Andrew Jackson roll the 5A in turn 1 and later Chad Koch went for a wild ride in turns 1 and 2. Something broke in the front end, sending him straight into the wall and then sending him flipping the 22C. Koch was helped to the ambulance for observation. No further information was available at the time of this story.

The Coors Light IMCA Sportmod A Main saw Dane Martindale’s 27 first back to the flag stand on lap 1 with the 11H of Nick Morris, Amber Cook in the 21 and Roger Sluka’s 5S close behind. Steffen Oaks passed Sluka on lap 3, putting the 17X into fourth. Cook took over the lead on lap 4 as Derek Hall advanced to fourth in the 44D. The yellow flag flew the next lap as Dion Kovar’s 18 and the 9X of John Allensworth Sr. spun in turn 1. Martindale moved back to the lead on the restart as Hall moved up to third. Oaks passed Hall 22 laps later to grab third and moved up to second the next lap. Matt Andrews put the 22 into fourth with 8 to go, moved to third 2 laps later and snared the second spot after another circuit. Kovar slowed with 3 laps left for another caution. Andrews took over the lead on the restart. Cole Wayman put the 18W into fourth the next lap. The final slowing in the action came with 1 to go as Sluka, Hunter Weber’s 99W and the 17 of Mary Lenz formed a pileup on the back stretch. The top 4 remained unchanged during the green/white/checkered finish with Andrews, Oaks, Hall and Wayman the top 4.

Tyler Jackson’s 13T, the 66 of Jeff Watts, Dave Carter in the 2C and Chantel Bade’s 02 were the top 4 after lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Ryan Gilland’s 46 lost a tire on lap 2 and the yellow lights were lit in the corner. Nick Beckman passed Bade on the restart to put the 22 into fourth and Watts snagged the lead. Carter moved up to second 2 laps later and moved to the lead on lap 9 with Brooke Fluckiger taking over fourth in the 2B. Watts regained first the next time around. Roy Armstrong looped the 6R in turn 4 after another lap. Jeff Ware advanced to fourth in the 83. Carter regained first the next time around. Ware got extremely loose after contact with Beckman the next lap for another caution. Mike Hansen put the 94 into fourth on the restart. Fluckiger spun with 2 to go, moving Watts back to fourth. Hansen advanced to second with 2 to go. Albert Kiihne took over the fourth spot the final lap making the top 4 Carter, Hansen, Jackson and Kiihne.

Bob Ruisinger’s 7, the 21H of Shane Hiatt, Travis Patterson’s 17K and the 21 of Josh Blumer ended up in a pileup in turn 1 on the first lap of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A Feature. The restart did not fare any better as another melee collected the 96 of Jaxon Saathoff, Mike Densberger’s 81, the 72 of Mike Lineberry and Aaron Pella’s 3A. When a lap was officially in the books Bob Zoubek led in the 5S with Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 86 of Justin Wulf and Hiatt rounding out the top 4. Hiatt moved up to second the next lap and took over second the following circuit. Thompson got back by Hiatt after 2 more laps. Chad Andersen put the 8C into fourth the next time around. Thompson advanced to first the next circuit as Andersen moved to third. Zoubek again led the next time around as Jordan Grabouski took fourth in the 30. The lead changed again the next lap with Thompson out front. Andersen moved up to second after 1 more circuit. Grabouski advanced to third the next lap. Andersen took over the lead after 2 more laps with Anthony Roth putting the 60IV into fourth. Roth moved up to third the next lap. Grabouski jumped to the lead with 5 to go. Roth moved up to second the next time around. Hiatt again moved to fourth after 1 more lap. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish with Grabouski winning, Roth second, Andersen third and Hiatt fourth.

Dan Markham led lap 1 of the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact finale in the 6, followed by the 10J of Jeremy Bohlen, Brian Cronin in the 35 and Tyler Masek’s 23B. Masek moved up to second on lap 2 with Cronin holding third and Devin Bruce putting the 52D into fourth. Dillon Richards passed Bruce the next time around. The yellow flag flew on lap 4 when Drake Bohlmeyer’s 24 stopped on the back stretch. Masek took advantage of the restart to move to first. Richards jumped up to third the next lap but lost the spot to Cronin after another circuit. Richards passed Cronin again with 7 to go but Cronin got back past him 2 laps later. The final Markham.

The A Feature for the Duros Dent Works Racesaver IMCA saw Mike Boston’s 51 come to a halt in turns 1 and 2 with a broken front end. When the race finally got started it became a series of ‘It looked like’ sessions. Chase Weiler led the first official lap in the 0 with Mark Vanderheiden’s 15V, the 30 of Jordan Grabouski and Gunnar Pike in the 25. It looked like Weiler was going to go on to win as he started to stretch out his advantage. Grabouski moved to second on lap 3. Troy Sanford put the 12K into fourth the next lap and advanced to third on lap 7. Pike moved back to fourth on lap 9. Pike dropped to the infield with 8 to go, moving Adam Gullion’s 91 into fourth. Boyd Peterson’s 57B slowed on the front stretch with 6 to go to slow the action. Grabouski took over the lead on the restart as Sanford moved to second. Jason Danley jumped to third the following lap in the 4X with Gullion holding onto fourth.  Gullion advanced to third in the closing laps. It looked like Grabouski would have his second victory on the night as he banged the cushion lap after lap, but Danley moved up to second and grabbed the lead on the final lap. The final top 4 were Danley, Grabouski, Gullion and Sanford.
