Crash Bash Night wins go to Anderson, Macku, Wulf, Moyer & Dover

By Greg Soukup

Given a reprieve by Mother Nature this week with no rain on Friday evening, Eagle Raceway’s crack track prep crew gave the racers what may have been the best racing surface of the year and the fans were treated to fantastic competition throughout Crash Bash Night presented by Colby Ridge and the Nebraska Lottery. Although there were brief moments of rain during the program the heats and features were completed without major incidents.

The beginning of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature was called back when Shelly Andersen’s 5V and the 5B of Matt Boucher spun in turn 2. Andersen again spun on the second attempt at a start when she looped her racer in turn 2 and went to the pits. The third try at a start went awry also when Nathan Kobus’s 15 and the 34 of Max Harder stopped in turn 4. When a lap was officially completed Joe Schidler’s K00 led with Steve Swarthout’s 23, the 22K of Kevin Anderson and the 96 of Gary Saathoff immediately behind him. Anderson passed Shidler for the lead on lap 2 and the previous week’s winner, the 5 of Marty Steinbach took fourth. Steinbach advanced another position on lap 3 as Joey Danley’s 14 cracked the top 4. Danley was passed by the 7R of Todd Sanford the next time around. Anderson snagged the lead 2 laps later as Sanford got around Steinbach for third. The next circuit Schidler briefly grabbed the lead but a 5 car pileup ensued when he and 4 others were involved in a pile-up in turns 3 and 4. At that time the race was called for a time limit. The final top 4 were Anderson, Steinbach, Sanford and the 11X of Nelson Volbrecht.

This was Kevin’s first Sport Modified win in this, his first year in the class after having moved up from the hobby stock ranks where he had multiple championships. He began the interview by saying “My pit crew did an awesome job. They got the car just right for me tonight. This is all new to us and we’ve been struggling all year. Ed Wooge has been working really long and hard to get us to where we are. I want to thank Randy Flodman and Todd Sanford for their help getting the car dialed in”. He finished by stating “Also, I want to give Roger a shout out because he gave us a hell of a track tonight. He gets so many complaints; he deserves to be thanked when it’s right. With a dirt track you’re always fighting the weather, but I’ve never seen ANYONE work so hard to give us a great place to race”. Kevin’s sponsors include CJ’s Paintball, The Oil Guy, Brod’s Small Engines, Lincoln Lawn Care, Captain Jack’s, The Auto Connection and Creative Ink.

Andrew Lewis’ 44 was in the lead on lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main followed by Adam Vrbka’s 7V, the 83 of Robbie Hobus and Don Hall Jr.’s 92. Hobus and Hall Jr. both moved up 1 spot on lap 3 and Hobus grabbed the lead the next time around as RJ Macku jumped up to third. Macku got past Hobus on lap 5 as Roy Armstrong moved the 6R into fourth. Hall Jr. took fourth the next circuit as Lewis slowed and eventually went into the pits. Lap 6 saw Macku take the lead. 2 laps later Hobus went extremely high and Armstrong moved up to second. The top 4 remained unchanged to the end of the race with Macku winning, Armstrong second, Hobus third and Hall Jr. fourth.

RJ stated “I’m happy to finally finish and get the win after 2 DNF’s. I knew I had to stay out of trouble, and I finally did. I wouldn’t have been out here at all without Keith Dragoo, and I owe him big thanks”. RJ’s sponsors include Big Johnson Race Chassis, The Shop Inc, FRE Racing Engines, Chris High Painting and Red Line Grafix.

Next up was the Feature race for the Rev Honey IMCA Modifieds. Dustin Andersen’s 8A, Jerry Trejo’s 4T, the 86 of Justin Wulf and Mike Densberger in the 81 were the first four to the flag stand on lap 1. Densberger moved past Wulf on lap 2 and Chevy Hadan took fourth on lap 3. Lap 12 saw the yellow lights lit as Nathan Landauer’s 11N and the 95 of Dylan Smith tangled in turns 1 & 2. Lance Borgman’s 76, the 15W of Will Brack, Trejo and Hadan ended up in a mess in turns 1 & 2 on the restart. That made the running order Andersen, Wulf, Densberger and the 96J of Johnny Saathoff. This set the stage for the sort of racing that puts the fans on their feet week in and week out at Eagle. Andersen and Wulf went wheel to wheel on both ends of the track with Andersen holding him off temporarily as Saathoff grabbed third on lap 13. Matt Brack got his #16M into fourth on lap 14. Lap 15 saw Densberger and Trejo stop in turns 1 & 2 and the yellow flag was thrown. Saathoff flew high around both Andersen and Wulf on lap 16. Wulf also got past Anderson the next lap. Saathoff had gotten the lead running the rim and he stuck with that line as Wulf clung to the bottom where he had been running. Wulf’s strategy got him the lead back on lap 18. The only other change in the top 4 was the final circuit when Bob Zoubek moved the 5S into fourth. The final top 4 were Wulf, Saathoff, Matt Brack and Zoubek.

This was Wulf’s first A Modified win after moving up from the hobby stock ranks a couple of years ago. “This was the funnest race I’ve ever run” Wulf said. He continued by stating “I didn’t give up my line the whole time. When I saw Johnny pass me I told myself ‘I am NOT going to let him beat me’. I stayed on the bottom, got by him the next lap and held him off”. He finished by relating “I want to thank my Grandpa. Also my pit crew; Tim and Todd Wulf, Dave Volnek, Joe Spence and Bryan Crone all worked really hard to help me get the win tonight”. Wulf’s sponsors include Ken’s Smoke House, J & J Grading, Wulf & Sons Farms, Volnek Welding and Dylan Smith Motorsports.

The first lap of the Exhaust Pros IMCA Hobby Stock A was called back as 2 cars spun in turns 3 & 4. The top 4 as the field completed the first lap were the 4A of Jesse Osmon, Trevor Noonan in the 66, Melissa Cronin’s 5M and the 29 of Matt Moyer. Cronin and Moyer both moved up 1 position on lap 2 as Fred Johnson got the 69J into fourth. Nick Lindblad got into fourth on lap 5. Moyer moved to 2nd on lap 6 and then overtook Osmon for first the next time around. As the field came to the front stretch on lap 8 Osmon and Cronin both hit the wall very hard, causing the red flag to be displayed. Neither was badly injured but they were through for the evening. That made the top 4 Moyer, Lindblad, Kenny Roberts’ 69 and Johnson. Lap 10 saw Johnson get past Roberts to take third. The top 4 remained unchanged to the end.

Moyer’s 2nd win on the season prompted him to say “This was a fun race, and I bet it was really fun to watch!” He continued by stating “The track was awesome tonight. It’s amazing what Roger and the crew can do with no interference from Mother Nature”. His closing statements were “God bless America” and “Chevy ROCKS!!!”. Matt’s sponsors are Kinnersley Grading and General Siding.

The Budweiser 360 Sprint cars came onto the track for the final A Main. Doug Lovegrove was in the lead with his #44 on lap 1 with Jack Dover’s 53, the 28 of Ken Klabunde and Mike Boston’s 51 close behind. Gene Ackland moved the 14G into fourth on lap 3. The next lap Ackland moved up to third as Trevor Grossenbacher moved into fourth in the 35. Grossenbacher passed Ackland for third on lap 7. 3 more laps were in the books as Nick Bryan’s #6 slowed and stopped on the back stretch. At that time the top 4 were Lovegrove, Dover, Grossenbacher and Ackland. Grossenbacher got past Dover on lap 11 and Boston got around Ackland 2 laps later. Grossenbacher moved around Lovegrove the next lap and Dover passed Lovegrove 1 lap later. Ackland and Boston traded the fourth spot the next 2 laps with Boston regaining it on lap 17. 2 laps later Grossenbacher, who had moved to the high line to avoid the traffic on the bottom, climbed the wall in turns 3 & 4 and rolled his sprinter. That caused the red lights to be lit while his racer went to the pits on the hook. That put Dover into the lead with Lovegrove second, Boston third and Ackland fourth. Boston took second 1 lap after the restart; setting up a great battle to the finish as Dover ran the bottom and Boston punished the cushion. Dover held on for the win with Boston second, Ackland moving to third 4 laps after the restart and Lovegrove holding on for fourth.

“I started third in the feature, but we changed a couple of things that helped. I decided to run the top, but it seemed to go away. When I got to the bottom the car got really tight, but it was the fastest way around for me. I knew I heard someone coming on the top, but wouldn’t give up my line” Dover said. He finished by stating “I want to thank my crew; Will, Joey and Alex do a great job for me. Also I can’t thank Mom, Dad and my sisters enough for all that they do”. Dover’s sponsors include Thorpe’s Body Shop, Home Pride, Butlerbuilt, Trail Performance Coatings, Oil Medics and Ledger Motorsports.

After the A Features were run, the Crash Bash demolition derby was run on the front stretch. The results were as follows:
1st. Regan Connealy
2nd. Kenny Rosre
3rd. David Domrell
4th. Joel Brush
5th. Kirk Sake
6th Ryan Cheney
