Christmas in July victories go to Harker, Macku, Ward, Cronin and Boston

by Greg Soukup

Rotella’s and Colby’s Candy presented Christmas In July Saturday and it was a holiday for racing fans for sure. A huge car count of 182 and the season’s largest crowd turned out, thanks in part to the True Grit Challenge in memory of Jeff and Tanner Fosler.

There were no significant incidents in the preliminary events.

The initial A Feature was for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds. Kaleb Kennedy led Shawn Harker’s 40 and the 7R of Kyle Flodman. Harker moved up to second on lap 2 as Vrbka took the lead. Kenney passed Harker on lap 3. Rob Schreiner looped his 21R in turn 4 on lap 4 and the yellow flag was brought out. Harker retook second on the restart and Flodman moved to third. The next lap Gary Saathoff put his #96 into fourth. Harker took over the lead on lap 6 as Flodman moved up to second with Saathoff taking third the next time around. There was a major tie-up in turns 3 & 4 as Trevor Noonan’s 66, Steve Swarthout’s 23X and the 67D of Jason Trent came together and the caution lights were lit again. Joey Danley spun the 14 in turn 2 on the restart. Vrbka took to the infield on the restart, moving Kennedy back to fourth. The final position changes in the top 4 came with 6 to go when Saathoff moved back into second and Nelson Vollbrecht passed Kennedy to take over fourth. The final top 4 were Harker, Saathoff, Flodman and Vollbrecht.

“Honestly, this year I’ve just been trying to keep it off of the wrecker” Harker stated after his 4th win of the year. “It’s tough just getting through your heat. Anything can happen; just hit a spot wrong and pop a tire or whatever“ he continued. “But, I love racing here. It’s always great to race in front of a big crowd. Other places you run in front of maybe 300 people”. He concluded by relating “I kind of had to make myself be patient and just keep moving ahead and be smooth once I got the lead”. Harker’s sponsors include All American Painting, Liberty Safe, Tex Cattle and Midwest Custom Concrete.

Next up was the Jeff and Tanner Fosler True Grit Challenge for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock. Jeff was a fixture in the tow trucks at Eagle in the late 80’s and early 90’s before he and his son were killed 20 years to the day of the Challenge. Over $4800 was added to the purse for the race, with $1000 going to the winner and numerous contingency awards. Brint Lemke’s 26L, Mike Hansen in the 94, the 72V of Jesse VanLaningham and Tim Kozak’s 29 were the first 4 at the end of lap #1. Matt Fralin’s 2J and the 17K of Jim Kimmel got together on lap 4 with Fralin heading to the pits during the caution period. Hansen took the lead on lap 4 before giving it back to Lemke the next time around as Jeff Ware moved the 83 to fourth. RJ Macku passed Ware the next lap before moving up to the third spot after another circuit. VanLaningham passed Macku on lap 9 before advancing to second the next lap. Roy Armstrong, who had advanced to the A after beginning in the C Feature, cracked the top 4 on lap 12. Austin Luellen’s 3A stopped in turn 4 on the 13th circuit and Ben Becher’s 4B hit him. At that time the running order was Lemke, VanLaningham, Macku and Armstrong. VanLaningham moved high out of the racing groove on the restart putting Macku second, Armstrong third and Ware in fourth. Macku moved under and past Lemke with just a lap and a half left for the lead and Ware moved to third on the final lap.

“I’m just happy that everything stayed together this week after having to go to a back-up car last week” Macku related. “There were a lot of heavy hitters that came in tonight for the True Grit Challenge in memory of Jeff and Tanner Fosler” he continued. “I want to thank my car owner Thom Marsh and also my daughter Skyler” was RJ’s last thoughts. Macku’s sponsors include Skylimit Remodeling, Orion Racing, AAMCO Transmissions, Speedy Steve’s, The Shop Inc. and B & B Lawn Service.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified A Main was next on the racing agenda. Stacy Wilhelm’s 3W led the pack back to the flag stand at the end of the first lap followed by Bob Zoubek’s 5S, the V44 of Rik Gropp and Justin Wulf in the 86. Mike Densberger advanced the 81 to fourth on lap 2 as Zoubek grabbed the lead. Jared Deterding spun his 13J on lap 3. The restart was called back for debris on the track. When racing resumed Kevin Larkins put his 4X into fourth. Lap 5 saw Larkins move to third with Tim Ward’s 4TW moving up to fourth. Ward passed Larkins the next circuit and Densberger also passed Larkins to regain fourth. Lap 11 Ward advanced to second. 3 laps later Densberger grabbed third before losing the position to Chris Alcorn the next circuit. Densberger regained the spot shortly after that and Ward moved past Zoubek with just 3 laps left. Ward won, Zoubek was second, Densberger finished third and Alcorn came home fourth.

“The track is always racy here, with great competition. It’s really tough to win here” Ward said. He finished the interview by stating “I love coming here every summer. It’s always a good show in all of the classes every week”. Ward’s sponsors include France Motorsports, Fry’s Food Stores, Sims Metal Management and Pratt Wraps.

The first lap leader in the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A was Larry Cronin’s 5 with the 30 of Erica Cronin, Jeremy Baker’s 3J and the 82B of Kurt Beckstrom close behind. Gabe Barclay moved his 41 past Beckstrom and Baker on lap2 to snag the third spot. Matt Moyer moved the 29 to fourth on lap 3, and then moved to third then second over the next 2 circuits. Chadd Bassinger vaulted his 4X into second in the waning laps. When the checkered flag flew it was Larry Cronin, Bassinger, Moyer and Erica Cronin the first four.

Larry said “I hit a dip in the track the very first lap, and that threw me into my daughter’s car. I figured that I tore up both of our cars, but we both kept going and ended up with 2 in the top 4 for the night”. He concluded by relating “I owe it all to my sponsor Larry’s Auto Recyclers. Without him I wouldn’t even have a car, so this win goes to him”.

Doug Lovegrove’s 1 was your first lap leader in the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver 305 Sprint Car A main event followed closely by the 24R of Doug Roth, Nick Bryan’s 52 and the 14G of Gene Acklund. Chase Weiler looped the 21W in turn 4 of lap 2. 1 circuit after the restart Matt Richards moved the #44 to fourth, but Shayle Bade’s 03 spun in turns 3 & 4 to negate the pass. Richards did move to fourth on the next restart. Dan Satriano spun his #95 in turn 3 on lap 4 for another caution. Richards moved to second on the restart, Bryan took third and Mike Boston moved up to fourth in the #51. The next lap Boston advanced to third with Gregg Bolte moving to fourth in the 00. 2 laps later Lovegrove spun in turn 2. That made the top four Richards, Boston, Bolte and Acklund. Boston moved past Richards on the restart. With 5 to go Bade spun again, this time in turn 2 and Lovegrove had nowhere to go and made hard contact with her. Acklund used the restart to move up to third. The final yellow flag of the night came with 2 laps left when the 13 of Eric Reichwaldt stopped on the track. Terry Richards got the 18 into fourth on the final lap.

“This wasn’t my kind of track tonight” Boston said. “I had to move to the bottom to hold off Matt. I didn’t think he could pass me on the high side, so that was my best choice”. Boston’s sponsors include Moock Trucking, Johnson Farm and Woods Performance.
