All Hail Swanson, Lovegrove, Grabouski, Wayman & Pella for conquering the High Banks of Eagle Raceway on August 6th

All Hail Swanson, Lovegrove, Grabouski, Wayman & Pella for conquering the High Banks of Eagle Raceway on August 6th

By Greg Soukup

You may or may not believe this, it being August in Nebraska, but Saturday’s ‘All Hail The Eagle Dirt Kings Night’ presented by Pepsi and Demon Decals at Eagle Raceway was HOT!!!!!!! Temperatures reaching 100 and a heat index far surpassing may have lowered the car count and kept some fans from coming out, but the racing was fantastic as always with 3-wide action into the features.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.

Dan Jackson led the first lap of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car A Feature in the 3AM with Hunter Wergin’s 2X, the 22 of Nick Beckman and Tyler Barribo in the 14JR rounding out the top 4. Jeremy Bohlen looped his 10J in turns 3 & 4 on lap 2 for a caution. Beckman moved up to second on the restart as Barribo took over the third spot. Jackson regained the third spot the next time around as Cade Richards took over fourth in the 1R before advancing to third the following circuit and advancing to second after another lap. Jordan Grabouski jumped the #30 to third place that same lap as Barribo fell to fourth. Beckman dropped out the following lap making the top 4 at the time Jackson, Richards, Grabouski and Kyle Vanover’s 19. Barribo looped his car in turn 3 with9 circuits left for another caution. Richards took over the top spot on the restart with Grabouski moving to second 2 laps later. Just 4 laps remained when Wergin spun out at the top of turn 3 and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Vanover moved up to third on the restart. Grabouski made a big move the final time around coming out of turn 4. The final top 4 were Grabouski, Richards, Vanover and Jackson.

Jordan stated “It was really hot tonight. I had to take a shower right after the races because I stunk so bad!! It always feels great to win at Eagle. I had a great race with Cade! I really look up to him, especially with how young he is and as talented as he is. He’s really fun to race with. The track tonight was entertaining. Lots of moisture out there. Starting a little later really helped”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

A huge pileup in turn 3 occurred on the first lap of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod Main event including Ron Towle’s D38, the 413 of Beau Riffel, Ahnna Schouten in the 0na, Gary Saathoff’s 96, the 6A of Adam Armstrong, Tyler Nerud’s 5T, Adam Vrbka in the 7V. Andrews and Vrbka headed to the pits for repairs but returned to the action before racing resumed, Jacob Swanson’s 31S, the 88F of Rich Flock, Noah Williams27W and Joe Feyen in the 25X led the first official lap. Andrews jumped up to fourth on lap 6, then advanced to third on lap 8 before moving up to second the following circuit as Feyen again moved back into fourth. Feyen advanced to third with 9 to go making the final top 4 Swanson, Andrews, Feyen and Flock.

This was Jacob’s first victory at Eagle Raceway. He said “It was our first here but we won a couple at another track 2 years ago. We started on the pole and I just wanted to set sail and pick my line. I knew that the top was probably going to be the most dominant so I wanted to just hit my marks and continue on. We had really good drive coming out of the corner and the car stuck great all night, so it looks like we finally put one together. The track was awesome! It’s been pretty good all year. Roger does a heck of a job out here considering how many cars he gets every night, especially with as hot as it was today. The no hot laps didn’t matter at all either”. Jacob’s sponsors include Bomber’s Garage, Stars and Stripes Electric, Husker Power, Lincoln Winnelson, Spring Plumbing, Trout Painting, Lazarro Investment Properties, AgLand, Norther Plains, Brushco Lawn Care, Morrow Auto Collision,

The initial circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Kyle Schamp put the 2K out front followed by Brint Lemke in the 26L, Kyle Casteel’s 18K and the B4 of Ben Becher. Becher passed Casteel for third on lap 2 as Neil Pella put the 3N into fourth. Pella moved up to third the next lap and Michael Wade moved to fourth in the 12 two laps later. Ryan Gilland’s 46 made contact with Becher with 10 to go, causing him to jump over Becher’s left front tire and turn him sideways before ending up barrel rolling down the front stretch. He was not seriously injured. At that time, it was Schamp, Pella, Lemke and the 24R of Dillon Richards. Pella grabbed the lead with 11 to go. Richards passed Lemke for third the next lap. Richards also got past Pella for third the next lap as Wade moved back into the fourth spot. Adam Wasserman put the 41 into fourth the following circuit as Richards moved to second. Dave Carter got up to fourth with 6 to go as Wasserman moved to third. The final top 4 were Pella, Richards, Wasserman and Carter.

Neil stated “It was a good run. It was really hot out today, but the car stuck together and we got through the corners just fine. I knew a win was coming, and it was just a matter of time. I knew that Dillon was coming, it was just a matter of time. He showed himself once with like 8 or 9 to go. Then I didn’t see him for a while When it was just 5 to go I was counting and waiting. I saw the white flag but didn’t see him in 1 & 2 so I figured “Okay, he didn’t try me in 1 & 2, so he’s going to try me in 3 & 4. Sure enough, I saw him but I had just enough to get out front and win the drag race and get the win from the pole. I talked to him about the race and found out that we both had the same issue with our cars. We had a push going into the corners and had drive coming out. That was a tricky track. It got slick going in and tacky coming out so driver control was the most important. I want to give thanks to my family and my girlfriend for all of their support as well as my sponsors”. Jacob’s sponsors include Bosphur Family Trucking, TC Outdoor Power, Trade Center Automotive, Southwest Auto, Gilland Electric, Gilland Builders, BBR Racing, Schoenweis Trucking and Adams Repair.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified finale’s first circuit saw Chad Andersen put the 8C out front followed closely by Josh Blumer’s 21, the 3W of Cole Wayman and Rik Gropp in the V45. Clint Homan passed Gropp on lap 2 to put the 27 into fourth. Wayman got past Blumer on lap 2 for second. Homan also passed Blumer the next lap for third. The following circuit saw Shawn Harker put the #40 into fourth place. Jared Deterding slowed his 13J on the back stretch, bringing the yellow flag out. Harker moved up to third on the restart. Wayman grabbed the lead with 8 to go. Andersen took to the infield and slowed the next lap for another caution. That made the top 4 Wayman, Harker, Homan and the 5S of Bob Zoubek. Zoubek moved to third with 6 circuits left as Jordan Grabouski put the 30 into fourth. Grabouski took the third spot from Zoubek with 3 to go and moved past Harker for second on the following circuit as Harker fell to fourth. The top 4 were Wayman, Grabouski, Zoubek and Harker.

This was Cole’s first win at Eagle Raceway in an IMCA Modified after having won previously in a sportmod. He related “For all of the races I’ve been at here at Eagle this year, this is probably the raciest track we’ve had! The cushion wasn’t super high up, but there was a bottom side and you could run in the middle. The high side was definitely the best way around though. I want to thank my Mom and Dad, my girlfriend Courtney and everyone who helps out”. Cole’s sponsors include AM Contracting, Ashley Terry with Woods Brothers Realty, Jet Racing Chassis and Uribe Refuse.

Last up was the A Feature for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Ryan Kitchen led lap 1 in the 91K, Brandon Horton’s 1B was second, Doug Lovegrove held third in the 55 with fourth place being held by Dan Nekolite’s 22D. Horton passed Kitchen for the lead on lap 2. Mike Houseman Jr. put the 4L into fourth place the next time around. Kitchen retook the lead on lap 4. Houseman Jr. moved up to third on lap 9 but lost the spot back to Lovegrove the next circuit. Lovegrove moved up to second on lap 11 and Houseman Jr. followed him into third the next lap. Joey Danley took over fourth place after another circuit in the 14 before moving up to third with 8 to go before taking second with 5 to go as Lovegrove took the lead. The top 4 at the checkers were Lovegrove, Danley, Kitchen and the 91 of Adam Gullion taking fourth in the closing laps.

Doug’s win came from 5th on the starting grid. I mentioned to Doug that it had been a long time since I had the pleasure of interviewing him, to which he replied “Yeah. I don’t know that we won one last year, but the year before that I think we won 3 or 4. We made some changes to what our usual regimen is I think it’s going to help us out. This car is actually my old car that I bought in 2011, the Weers family bought it from me for Richard to run so now I’m getting to get back into my old car. It’s a really good car; I don’t know why I ever sold it. It rolls around the track really nice. I want to say I got up front four or five laps in. I was rolling around following Ryan and seeing how his car worked. I didn’t think that as the bottom burned off that he was going to be able to stick there. I wasn’t going to press the issue with him because I was fairly confident that I could get around him before too long. If I could just get a good head of steam that I could keep the really good drivers that were rolling around the cushion behind me. I’m lucky because I didn’t get to see any of those last few laps! I was behind a black and white lapped car and I couldn’t seem to get him. I rolled into turn 3 and thought to myself ‘Those last 2 laps were so slow that somebody had to be coming!’. So, I rolled into the corners just hard enough that the car would drift all the way to the wall and shut the door on anybody coming on the top. I wasn’t going to lead all of those laps and then give it away in the last corner!! Dick, Yvonne and Richard Weers are great people to drive for and great friends. We have a lot of fun
They’re at another track tonight, so they missed it, but I bet that they’ll be here next week because we had a blast ”. Doug’s sponsors include Carpetland and Duros Dent works.
