Richards, Hiatt, Grabouski, Armstrong, Danley & Kent pick up wins at Eagle Raceway’s Dad’s Crash Bash

By Greg Soukup

The sun was out (finally) Saturday as Avid Realty, Charger Chassis and Rotella’s presented Dads Crash Bash but the large crowd showed that race fans want racing!!! They were treated to 145 cars in the pits ready to tackle the high banks of America’s Home Track, Eagle Raceway. Once the sun went down so did the temperatures and a nice southerly breeze made it a perfect night to be at the track.

The only serious incident in the preliminary racing came in the second heat for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints when Neil Nickolite 12N flipped coming out of turn 4. His racer was too badly damaged to continue but he was not seriously injured. This was part of his comeback season at Eagle Raceway since a very serious incident last season.

The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car main event saw the 22S of Shane Stutzman and the 3 of Tim Horsham come to a halt in turn 2. On the restart there was a big tangle of cars get together coming out of turn 4. When a lap was finally in the books Gary Laflin in the 9 was out front followed by Hunter Wergin’s 2X, Jordan Grabouski’s 30, and the 83 of Jeff ware. Lap 2 saw the 17TK of Travis Patterson spin out at the bottom of turn 1 for another caution and Wergin was sent to the rear of the field for causing the spin. That moved Matt Boucher’s 5B into fourth. On the restart Grabouski snagged the lead. Horsham again looped it in turn 2 and the yellow flag was displayed. Ware took advantage of the restart, moving up to second with Boucher following him into third the next time around. Boucher lost third to Laflin the following lap. Wergin spun in turns 3 & 4 with 10 to go for yet another caution. Kyle Vanover used the restart to take the fourth spot. He lost it the next lap to the 1R of Cde Richards before regaining the position with 7 to go. The final top 4 were Grabouski, Ware, Laflin and Vanover.

Grabouski said “It’s fun racing here! With so many people in the stands it’s a cool night to win; they packed them in here good. The track was real good tonight! Heck of a sprint car A, modified A, all 5 classes. It was a great night of racing. Hats off to my crew for weathering this hot night and now it’s time for a few cold adult beverages”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

Next up was the finale for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. John Schwindt’s 18J, the 77 of Shawn Davis, McLain Reed’s 44 and the 88F of Richard Flock were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Flock jumped up to second on lap 2. Adam Armstrong put the 6A into third 2 laps later with Joe Feyen moving to fourth the next time around. Armstrong took over second after another lap was in the books. Feyen advanced to third 2 laps later. There were 10 circuits remaining when Matt Andrews spun out in turns 1 & 2. At that time, it was Reed, Armstrong, Feyen and Flock out front. Armstrong took the lead on the restart, Feyen grabbed second the next lap and Flock moved to third after another circuit. The final change in the top four came when Drake Bohlmeyer put the 24 into fourth. Armstrong won, Feyen came in second, Flock was third and Bohlmeyer rounded out the top 4.

I mentioned that it had been a nice run for him, coming from seventh on the starting grid. He stated “It was a good run, that’s 2 in a row for us. You’ve got to take them when you get them. With this many cars up here, this is one place that is tough. I mean, you just don’t see a track that has this many cars, week in and week out; a special event quantity of cars. The car worked really good again tonight. We wrote some notes down and we’ll just try to keep it going. I was really shocked how good the track was with all of the rain they got this week. That’s obviously a big thank you to Roger for getting it in shape and then going out at intermission and reworking it and putting a little moisture in it. I personally want to thank him, because that means a lot; giving us something good to race on. That’s another thing you don’t see at a lot of other tracks, go out and rework the track to make it better. That right there is why a lot of racers drive a long way to race here. I want to thank Todd Deke, my aunt Bonnie Armstrong, Five Two Customs, Vickie and Laurie and my dad Roy with Armstrong Racing Engines”. Adams’s sponsors include Avid Realty, Renee Bartlett Insurance, Brooklyn’s Hair and Replacement, Classis Wood, Bart’s Bar and Grill, Jet Racing, Stone Cold Restorations, Todd Deke, Nick and Laurie Nanfito, SCAT Crankshafts, Icon Pistons and Jomar Performance Products.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next for their A. Cole Krichau led lap #1 in the 30K with Kile Casteel’s 18K second, Troy Dowty in the 17T third and the 3N of Neil Pella fourth. Lap 2 saw Jeff Watts jump the 66 into third. Krichau dropped out on lap 3 with unknown causes putting Casteel first, Jeff Watts second Dowty third and Pella fourth. Dillon Richards made a huge move the next time around, jumping up to second in the 24R with Kevin Betzen’s 42 third and Pella fourth. Richards took the lead the next time around. There were just 10 circuits remaining when Pella advanced to third with Mike Hansen putting the 94 into fourth. Tyler Jackson spun the 13T in turn 1 2 laps later, collecting the 92 of Don Hall Jr. and the11 of Claton Peters. On the restart, Dave Carter took over fourth in his 2C and moved to third 2 laps later. There were just 2 laps left when Betzen passed Richards for the lead but lost it back to him the final circuit. The final top 4 were Richards, Betzen, Carter and Pella who got to fourth the last lap.

Richards could not be located for an interview.

James Mesenbrink’s 33M, the 96 of Jaxxon Saathoff, Ryan Sample in the 97 and Rik Gropp’s V45 were the top four after lap #1 of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified Feature. Clint Homan passed Gropp for fourth in the #27. Shane Hiatt got past Homan for fourth in the 21H on lap 6. Gropp dropped to the infield 2 circuits following that at. Messenbrink led, Saathoff second, Hiatt third and Homan fourth. Aaron Pella’s 3A spun in turn 1 with 11 to go for a caution. One lap after the restart Hiatt advanced to second as Shawn Harker put the 40 into fourth. The next circuit saw Jeff Schroyer spin in turns 1 & 2. Hiatt grabbed the lead one lap after the restart. With 6 to go Jordan Grabouski jumped to third in the 30 and moved up to second the next lap but was put back to third when Nate Thomson’s 3T spun in turn 1 for a caution. Grabouski again advanced to second on the restart. There were 3 laps to go when Homan regained fourth but lost the spot back to Saathoff to make the final top 4 Hiatt Grabouski, Mesenbrink and Saathoff.

I told Shane that the race was a great battle the whole way through. He replied “Yeah. When you race here at Eagle, it’s the best of the best! It’s tough to even finish in tech here with all of the great drivers here. We’ve struggled all year here and about everywhere else. We made a bunch of changes on the car, threw some things at it that we hadn’t tried yet and it seems like it paid off. We could really roll the bottom good and there at the end with that last caution I was kind of nervous because I figured Jordan or somebody would be right there and Jordan was. I didn’t look up at the scoreboard, I just hit my marks and tried to just hang onto the lead. I need to say thanks to my Mom, and especially my dad since it’s Father’s Day weekend. A huge thanks to my wife and kids and also my brother”. Shane’s sponsors include BSB Manufacturing, CPD Shocks, Moock Trucking, Dynamic Drivelines, Kevco racing oil pans & components, JGR, RC’s Pit Stop, BBR, Skytop Towers, J & K Motorsports, DSR, Big Red Towing, Jed’s Backstretch BBQ, The Hideout Bar & Grill, Preston Smith Trucking, Cruz Hiatt Motorsports, Beyea Headers,, Emma and T-Rex Construction.

The last race of the evening was for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Gunnar Pike spun the 25G to the infield on the start. The first official lap showed Mike Houseman Jr.’s 4L out front, followed by Dan Neckolite in the 22N, Jay Russell’s 76 and the 51 of Mike Boston. Boston passed Russell for third on lap 2. Russell jumped up to second on lap 3. Lap 15 saw Josh Riggins’ 14J spin out in turns 1 & 2. With 11 circuits remaining Trevor Grossenbacher put the 35 into fourth and moved up to third 2 laps later. The next time around Tyler Drueke’s 12 and the 57 of Mitchell Moore made contact and spun in 1 and 2. At that time it was Houseman, Russell, Grossenbacher and Boston. Grossenbacher passed Russell for second on the restart as Joey Danley cracked the top 4 in his #14. Russell regained second the next lap. 4 laps remained when Gene Ackland spun the 14G in turns 3 & 4. Russell moved to the lead on the restart as Danley moved up to third. Danley continued his march to the front, moving to second with just 3 laps left and taking the lead from Russell the next time around. With just 1 to go Derek Kral looped the 85 in turn 4, making it a green/white/checkered battle for the win. Nothing changed in the top 4 to the finish with Danley winning, Russell second, Houseman third and Grossenbacher fourth.

“I started 10, and I think I ran there it felt like half the race. We finally started coming on a little bit in the second half. We got a lot of opportune yellows for us and started picking our way towards the leaders. The track was really great tonight, you couldn’t ask for anything better! It was great right around the top, down close to the tires on the bottom; it was a blast!! Roger did a really great job with the heat and everything. My favorite track of the year”. Joey’s sponsors include Empire Fence, The Wave, My Salesman, Nissen Hardwood Floors, Automotive Services and Onyx Digital Group.

The “90’s and new Hobo class” Demo Derby Came out next along with some of the Eagle Raceway School buses to box in the field of 13 cars that were either out competing to win the $800 Mad Dog Award or the win which was also worth $800. The drivers put on a great show for the fans. The Top 5 finishers were: 1. #77 Levi Kent Blue Hill, NE. 2. #67 Jordan Volkmer Schyuler, NE.  3. #14B Brittany Dowty Fremont, NE. 4. #2022 Andrew Hamann (Eagle Fan Giveaway Car) 5. #8A Dustin Andersen Omaha, NE. Then the officials picked the top 3 cars that they thought could deserve the Mad Dog Award (Hardest Hits, Best Show etc.). The top three that were nominated for the award were #8A Dustin Andersen, #77 Levi Kent and #67 Jordan Volkmer. The crowd cheers would determine the winner of the award. The Mad Dog winner was announced as Jordan Volkmer with 2nd place going to Levi Kent. Both drivers received an award. We plan on running a 90’s and Newer demo next year on Father’s Day weekend again.

Next Saturday is Junior Fan Club Night, presented by Great Clips and Village Ponte Toyota. Those fans 12 and under get in the front gates free and there will be a free $1600 money grab during intermission.
