Fan Appreciation Night wins go to Saathoff, Snyder, Andrews, Ware & Meyer

By Greg Soukup

I think that every driver, crew member and even fans have wanted to “get even” with an official at a dirt track at one time or another. Well, last evening at Eagle Raceway they all got their chances!! During Eagle Racing Riot-Fan Appreciation Night water balloons were on sale to benefit the non-qualifiers at this year’s IMCA Sprint Car Racesaver Nationals. Then, at intermission the officiating crew, including owner/promoter Roger Hadan lined up in front of the grandstand and got pelted from every direction.

Nick Morris put the 11H out front of the first lap of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modified Feature followed by the 88F of Rich Flock, Derek Hall in the 44D and Amber Cook’s 21. Flock grabbed the lead on lap 2 as Matt Andrews put the 22 into fourth. Jeremy Baker passed Andrews the next time around in his 3J. Andrews jumped all the way up to second on lap 4 with Hall third and Baker fourth. Cole Wayman joined the front runners on lap 6 when his 18W took over the fourth spot. Shawn Harker put the #40 into second the next time around. The next lap saw Wayman spin out in turn 1 and Morris looped it in turn 4. At that time the top 4 were Andrews, Harker, Hall and Baker. Joe Schidler cracked the top 4 with 7 to go in his K00 but lost the spot back to Baker the next circuit. Harker passed Andrews for the lead after another lap. Gunnar Pike put the #25 into fourth with 3 circuits remaining. Andrews got back past Harker the next lap making the final top 4 Andrews, Harker, Hall and Pike.

This was win #4 on the year for Andrews at Eagle Raceway. “It was a heck of a run! Unfortunately for Harker a lapped car kind of invaded our race. I think it might have come down to a great race because he definitely had the advantage. He was a little quicker than me coming out of the corners. I used that lapped car to my advantage and was victorious” he said. Andrews’ sponsors include Bonta Medical, Jet Racing, Skytop Towers, Lippy’s Barbecue and RDM Landscapes.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Neil Pella’s 3N, the 29rd of Rowan Mason, Albert Kiihne in the 85 and Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B the top four after the first lap. Lap 2 saw a big pile-up in turns 1 and 2, including Pella. That put the 11B of Brett Saathoff into fourth. Saathoff jumped up to second a lap after the restart. Jeff Ware cracked the top 4 with 14 laps remaining in his 83. Ware wasted little time, jumping into the lead 2 laps later. Fluckiger again moved to fourth with 10

to go. Saathoff advanced back to second 2 laps later. There were 4 circuits left when Mason stopped at the top of turn 2, putting Mike Hansen’s 94 in fourth. Fluckiger looped her racer on the back stretch a lap after the restart, putting the 66 of Jeff Watts into fourth. Tyler Jackson’s 13T and Watts spun in turns 1 and 2 with 1 lap left, moving Colby Kaspar’s 39C into fourth. The final top 4 were Ware, Saathoff, Hansen and Kaspar.

The win marked Ware’s 9 consecutive visit to the winner’s circle! I asked him what was the secret of his success, and he stated “I don’t even know what to say! We maintenance the car, Dad and I work on it and I run it. I don’t know, I have no idea. I’m baffled”. Ware’s sponsors include Roth Racing, Shane’s Repair, Demon Decals, Charger Chassis, T & R Repair, Integra Shocks and Avenue Bar.

Scott Bivens’ S56, the 27 of Clint Homan, Jaxon Saathoff in the 96 and Aaron Pella’s 3A were first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Hoosier Tire IMCA Modified A Feature. Homan passed Bivens on lap 2 for the lead. Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth the next lap. Anthony Roth’s 60IV stopped on the back stretch the next time around with severe damage to the right front after hard contact with the Armco in turns 1 and 2. Saathoff moved up to second on the restart and Hiatt followed him into third the next lap. Jesse Sobbing’s 99 stopped at the top of turn 4 after another lap and headed to the pits but returned before the field restarted. Saathoff used the restart to snag the lead and as before Hiatt followed him, grabbing second. Hiatt moved to the lead on lap 9 but Nate Thompson’s 3T stopped at the top of 1. The yellow flag period negated the pass. Johnny Saathoff put the 96J into fourth on the restart. Jared Deterding’s 13J stopped in turns 1 and 2 with 9 to go for another caution. Bob Zoubek put the 5Z into fourth on the restart and moved to third on the final circuit. That made the top 4 Jaxon Saathoff, Hiatt, Zoubek and Homan.

One of the great pleasures of my job is the opportunity to interview first-time winners, and speaking with Jaxon just reinforced that feeling. His victory came after starting fourth. “I’m so glad that I finally got it over with. Benji Legg told me that the first time I was leading the A Feature and took the white flag that I would mess up. I didn’t mess up though; thank God! I remember that we had a yellow, and I made the mistake of looking at the scoreboard to see how many laps we had left. That was a bad idea!! Shane got by me once in turn 2 because I slid up a

little bit, but luckily, we had that yellow. I know that I took his line, and kind of cut him off a little bit, but I guess that’s racing. Thanks to Kyle Vanouver at Speedway for building my shocks for me. I really want to thank my dad; Jet Racing and Northeast Auto. He’s definitely the best teacher that I could ever have” he related. Saathoff’s sponsors include I-70 Auto Auctions, Penner Insurance, Toobie’s Lumber and Speedway Racing Engines.

Next was the finale for the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compacts. Tim Horsham’s 3 led the field after the first lap with Luke Nicholson’s 55, the 21R of Ramsey Meyer and Brian Cronin in the 35 close behind. Meyer moved to the lead on lap 2 with Horsham second, Cronin third and Steffen Oaks’ 17 in fourth. Matt Kempkes’ 58 struck an implement tire guarding turns 1 and 2 and ended up rolling in turn 2. He was unhurt, but his car was unable to continue. At just that moment the track’s generator experienced a failure and the lights were off. Once power was restored the racing continued. Oaks moved to third 1 lap after the restart and took over the second spot the next time around. 2 laps later Cole Krichau put the 70SS into fourth. Meyer held off the competition, winning by a straightaway with Oaks second, Horsham third and Krichau fourth.

Meyer left before being interviewed.

The Duros Dent Works IMCA Sprint Car A’s first circuit was led by the 1B of Brandon Horton with Neil Nickolite’s 12N, the 57B of Boyd Peterson and Ryan Kitchen in the 21 rounding out the top 4. Kitchen moved to third on lap 2 and Adam Gullion put the 91JV into fourth after another lap. Gullion passed Kitchen after another circuit, moved to third the next lap and advanced to second 2 laps later with Stu Snyder putting the #5 into fourth. Gullion passed Horton the next time around. Nick Bryan’s 52 stopped in turns 1 and 2 on lap 10 and the yellow flag flew. Lap 11 saw Snyder advance to third. Snyder moved up to second the next lap with Kitchen retaking fourth. Kitchen advanced to second the next lap. Tyler Drueke put the #12 into fourth after another circuit. Kitchen looped it in turns 1 & 2 with 9 to go for another caution, moving Drueke to third and Nickolite to fourth. Joey Danley passed Nickolite with 8 laps left in the #14. Snyder grabbed the lead from Gullion with 6 laps to go as Nickolite again moved to fourth. Danley got back past Nickolite 2 laps later and moved to third the next time around. At the finish it was Snyder, Gullion, Danley and Drueke.

This was Snyder’s second victory at Eagle Raceway this season. “That was our second, but the first one was kind of given to us after a disqualification. We started 10th because of our point average. I was kind of trying to judge Horton and Adam to see where they were a little bit better than I was. Then I started smelling rubber, and I learned a long time ago that the left rear tire would start laying rubber before the right rear tires. So, you don’t necessarily have to keep beating down the wall, just move down 1 car lane to get your right rear into that left rear rubber. It usually takes a couple of laps, but it hasn’t let me down yet. That’s just something that I learned a long time ago from Jeff Lowery and I’ve never forgotten it. Adam went to the bottom and I thought ‘I’ve got a shot here. I know he’s in the moisture, but I’m sure there’s a rubber line through the middle. I’ll try that really quick’. We tried it and drove right around the outside of him. We might have touched a little bit, but I thought I was clear. Then it was get into the clean air and just count the lap down, run consistently and hopefully you can pull it off. I’ve got to thank KRL Motorsports for giving me the opportunity to drive for them. They’re basically my second family; I grew up in their shop since I was a year or 2 old. It’s just a great family deal. They gave me the opportunity to drive for them last year, which took the weight off of my shoulders with both my Racesaver team and 360 team. I also have to thank my brother from another mother Nate Weiler for loaning me a spacer for the left rear because I didn’t have one. I think that might be why we won this deal!” said Snyder. Snyder’s sponsors also include KP Designs, Sosebee Motorsports, Hozby Power, Sardeson Racing, Meyers Racing Engines, Momentum Racing Suspensions, JR1 Chassis, Jercro Investments, Lutton Law Office, Speedway Graphics and Smith Repair.
