Sunny skies and cooler than normal temperatures greeted a very large crowd who came through the gates of “America’s Home Track” for Eagle Raceway’s annual Kids Night, presented by No Frills Supermarket.
A total of 300 children left with huge smiles on their faces and also a new bicycle. Race teams, individuals and several companies purchased bicycles to be given away and Roger & Michelle Hadan chipped in also; buying 1 bike for every 2 that the race teams purchased. A big thank you goes out to Gary Dominguez who jumped in and took over the bike giveaway helm this year. Also, not enough can be said for all of the volunteers who assisted in 1 way or another to make sure that the giveaway went off without a hitch.
All preliminary events went off without any major incidences.
The Monster IMCA Modifieds were first on the high banks for the feature event. Terry Richards’ 18 was in the lead as lap 1 was completed followed by Nathan Landauer’s 11N, the 1X of Chris Abelson and Jerry Trejo’s 4T. Lap 2 saw Abelson jump up 1 position to second and Roger Hadan putting the #4 in fourth the next time around. Hadan got past Landauer 2 laps later as Landauer spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. That made the running order Richards, Abelson, Hadan and the 3A of Aaron Pella. Abelson used the restart to move past Richards for first. Lap 8 saw defending IMCA National Champion Dylan Smith crack the top four and Smith then advanced another spot to third on the next lap. Johnny Saathoff moved into fourth on lap #12, but both Chad Anderson’s 8C and the 30 of Jordan Grabouski spun in turn 2. The restart lap saw Smith take over second and Saathoff again move into fourth. Saathoff came forward one more spot on lap 16 when he moved to third. The running order remained the same for the rest of the race with Abelson winning, Smith second, Saathoff third and Richards fourth.
“I knew that everyone would hit it as hard as they could on the start, so I laid off a little and headed to the bottom. Luckily I spotted the moisture there before anyone else. That let me move from the sixth row outside to third while most of the others were still trying to find some bite” said Abelson. “This track sure was a lot different from last night” he continued; “I just held my line and took it easy”. Abelson’s sponsors include Abelson Auto Body, Skyline Bar & Casino and Dirt Destroyers Cleaning Service.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks then took to the track. At the conclusion of the first lap Ron Novak’s 14 was out front with Clark Becher’s B4 in second, Roy Armstrong’s 6R third and the 12 of Dan Noonan fourth. Armstrong and Noonan both moved past Becher on lap 4 to second and third. Nick Beckman moved his #22 into fourth on lap #6. The first caution of the race came on lap #9 for debris. Lap 10 saw Mike Hansen around Beckman only to lose the spot back to Beckman on lap 15 while Armstrong took over first. The top four at the checkers were Armstrong, Novak, Noonan and Beckman.
“It’s great to get the first win on the year finally. I’ve been tuning on the car every week for the last few weeks, because I just couldn’t get a win. There was a lot of bad luck, but a lot of it was the car too. I’ve had to straighten the frame twice so far this season in fact” Armstrong related. “The last two weeks we’ve made some drastic changes and tonight they finally worked. It just that you need to keep trying. Thanks to John Hansen, my crew man because we may have finally found it” he said. Roy’s sponsors are his sister Bonnie, Dianne Little and NEAPCO his employer.
The next A Main was for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds. The S53 of Scott Robinson led the first circuit and he had the 52M of Sean Manning, the 20 of Lindsey Yost and the 11X of Nelson Vollbrecht close behind. Lap #2 saw Manning grab the lead and the 14 of Joey Danley take fourth. The next lap saw Denny Ray Berghahn Jr. move into third and Vollbrecht retake fourth as Danley slowed. The next lap the 7R of Todd Sanford spun in turn four. At that point the order was Manning, Robinson, Berghahn Jr. and Vollbrecht. Berghahn Jr. used the restart to move into second. Yost spun in turn 2 on lap 6, collecting the 44 of Steven Saunders. Vollbrecht moved past Robinson on the restart. Gary Saathoff got the 96 into fourth the next lap, but had to give the position back as Jeremy Noonan’s 33 stopped on the front stretch. There were 8 laps remaining when Kyle Prauner got his 5K into fourth, but again Yost was involved in bringing out the caution as she, the 12T of Nate Thompson and Kevin Jochum’s 90 stopped in a group on the backstretch. Manning was still in the lead with Berghahn Jr. second, Vollbrecht third and Robinson fourth. On the restart Berghahn Jr. took first, Vollbrecht grabbed second and Prauner moved to third. Prauner made the final advance with 3 to go as he moved to second. At the finish it was Berghahn Jr. getting his fourth straight win at Eagle, Prauner, Vollbrecht and Benji Legg’s 25L who took the position in the waning laps.
“It was a great track everywhere. Smooth and dry slick is a driver’s track. I just went easy on the throttle and my lap times got faster. Thanks to Roger and the crew for the work they did” Denny said. He continued the interview by stating “It was great to win after being really sick the last two days”. He concluded by relating “Thanks to No Frills Supermarket for putting on the show tonight; my 2 year old even won a bicycle. And a special thanks to Dave Harbin from Village Inn. He hasn’t been to a race in like 15 years, and it was nice to put on a good show for his birthday”. Denny’s sponsors include Village Inn, Patriot Racers Inc., The Fox & Hound and Denny B. Towing.
The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts were up next and the leader on lap 1 was Kenny Robert’s 69. Rick Hollandsworth’s 35H, Elliott Halvorson in the 22 and Mary Lenz’s 17 rounded out the top 4. Fred Johnson got the 69J into fourth on lap 3 and Lenz moved past Halvorsen to retain fourth. Lap 6 saw John Sedlachek pass Lenz for fourth and then move into third 5 circuits later. Kyle Gannon moved up to fourth on the last lap. The finishing order for the top 4 was Roberts, Hollandsworth, Sedlachek and Gannon.
“I got my first win tonight, thanks to a great car that was really hooked up. I owe it to my pit crew Dustin and my father Billy. I want to thank all of the fans for coming out and supporting us every week” Roberts said. Roberts currently has no sponsors.
As lap #1 went into the books Nick Bryan had the #6 out front of the Budweiser 360 Sprint A Feature with Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 second, Frank Sheridan third in the 6B and Tadd Holliman’s 23R fourth. Grossenbacher passed Bryan for the lead on lap #2. Lap 4 saw Gene Acklund’s 14G get past Holliman for fourth but John Klabunde spun the 77 in turn four. Acklund took the spot again on the restart. Lap #5 saw Jordan Boston’s 4 jump all the way up to third and then to second the next lap as Holliman again got to third. Only one more lap was required for Boston to pass Grossenbacher for the lead. Stu Snyder got the 23S into fourth on lap #9 and 3 more laps were in the books when he moved up to third only to have Holliman repass him. Snyder made the pass stick on lap 14. Acklund again took fourth on lap 17. Lap 20 saw Snyder put a slide job on Grossenbacher in 3 and 4 to snag second. The top 4 at the checkered flag were Boston, Snyder, Grossenbacher and Acklund.
“I was happy to get the win, since I broke the left rear shock about 1/2 way through the A. Between that and being sick the last few days this was a great night” Boston stated. He concluded the interview by saying “Thanks to Rick and Michelle Bowers my car owners for giving me the chance to race their car; also my crew Rick, Dave, Steve & Chris.”. Jordan’s sponsors include Eckley Racing Engines, Select Auto, Mook Trucking, A & R Salvage, Carberry Construction and Double Z Express.
